Mike Schubert (born February 3, 1973 in Schwedt / Oder ) is a German political scientist and local politician ( SPD ). He has been Lord Mayor of the Brandenburg state capital Potsdam since November 28, 2018 .

education and profession

After the family moved from Schwedt to the state capital Potsdam, Schubert finished school in 1989 with secondary school leaving certificate. Immediately thereafter, he began training as an industrial electronics technician in Teltow . After the fall of the Berlin Wall , he was forced to quit the apprenticeship due to the sudden loss of career prospects. He moved to Berlin and began training as a retailer there, which he successfully completed.

After a failed attempt to become self-employed, Schubert worked as a freelance insurance agent from 1994 to 1996. In 1996 Schubert was drafted into military service . After basic training, he extended his service as a press soldier in Geltow . He passed the aptitude test at the University of Potsdam and began studying economics and political science in 1997 , which he completed in 2004 with a diploma in political science .

During his studies, Schubert worked for various members of the state parliament.

As of December 2015, Schubert is a member of the supervisory board of Energie- und Wasser Potsdam and also a member of the advisory board of AWO Kinder- und Jugendhilfe Potsdam gGmbH. No information is known about the resulting references.

In 1995 Mike Schubert joined the SPD and ran for the city ​​council in Potsdam in 1998 .

From 2004 to 2009 he headed the office of the Brandenburg state parliament member Klara Geywitz and the then Prime Minister Matthias Platzeck .

Between 2005 and 2016 Schubert held the office of chairman of the SPD city council group in Potsdam. In 2008 he also took over the chairmanship of the SPD sub-district Potsdam. He also held this office until 2016.

From 2009 to 2016 Schubert was an employee in the Ministry of the Interior and for Local Affairs in the State of Brandenburg. During this time he headed the ministerial office, was commissioner for civil-military cooperation and then started in 2012 in the department for fire, disaster control and military affairs, which he took over a year later.

From September 2016, Schubert was councilor for social affairs, health, youth and order in the Brandenburg state capital, Potsdam. On January 20, 2018, Mike Schubert was nominated as a candidate for the mayoral election at the general assembly of the SPD Potsdam. He won the election on September 23, 2018 and took up his new office on November 28, 2018.

In March 2020, he campaigned for the admission of unaccompanied, minor children from Greek refugee camps.

In 2002, Mike Schubert spent six months as a reservist in Kosovo . During this time he used his vacation to volunteer to help repair the damage caused by the flood on the Elbe .

Schubert was elected to the Presidium of the German Association of Cities by the Main Committee at the end of 2019 .

Schubert is married, has two children and lives in Potsdam.
