Middle Guard

Mittelwächter refers to the meal served at midnight during the seafaring phases for seafaring personnel of the German Navy and merchant shipping .

It usually consists of a simple warm meal, often soup, stew or sausages with potato salad, or coffee and sandwiches.

This meal is necessary due to the different waking and sleeping times of the crew due to the waking system. The middle guard is traditionally issued shortly before midnight, as the dog watch begins at midnight and the crew on watch should go to work strengthened.
