history

Gym of the Mombacher gymnastics club

Inspired by the brothers Hermann and Peter Gottron was the inaugural meeting for the Mombacher gymnastics club on June 2, 1861 the Gottron'schen property held on a Turner Linde was planted. The brothers were active on the board of the 35-member association from the start. First of all, horizontal bars , parallel bars and fescue were available to the club , which were set up in the Gottrons' garden. On February 6, 1864, the association acquired the gymnasium on the "Strunk" outside the old town wall, on which the gymnasium still stands today. The German War interrupted club life in 1866, then the first gym was built and inaugurated in 1869. The Franco-Prussian War brought club life to a standstill again.

In 1894 an expansion of the gym became necessary due to the rapid increase in membership, which was inaugurated in 1895. In the following year the association organized the 22nd Gauturnfest of the Turngau Mainz. In the same year the club was divided by the spin-off of a "gymnastics society". Mombacher gymnasts had been irregularly represented in various model teams since the 10th German Gymnastics Festival in Nuremberg at the latest  .

The first volunteer fire brigade in Mombach was formed from a gymnast fire brigade from the association. Accordingly, the first fire station with a hose tower was not far from the gym.

The second 50 years

Even before the First World War , the 50th anniversary was celebrated with festival commers, concerts and parades. After the end of the First World War, ball sports were practiced alongside gymnastics in 1920 and a handball department was finally founded in 1927 . This made it necessary to expand the hall in 1929, which was implemented in the form of a stage extension. After the withdrawal of the French occupation forces in 1930 and the transfer of government power in the German Reich on the NSDAP the voluntary sector was brought into line . After the outbreak of the Second World War , regular club life was out of the question as all male gymnasts were drafted. On September 27, 1944, the gym and its inventory were completely destroyed during the air raids on Mainz .

Post war history

Even after the war, associations were subject to the control of the Allies in the French occupation zone . Only one association was allowed to exist in each location. Although this ban on gymnastics clubs expired in 1949, the Mombach clubs did not become independent again until 1955. In 1956 the general assembly of the association decided to build a new gym. The first construction phase from 1958 was quickly followed by a second, so that in 1961 the new hall was inaugurated for the 100th anniversary.

Due to an outstanding period in the development of handball, the MTV joined forces in 1969 with the "handball club BSC 1920 Mainz-Mombach". However, the collaboration was ended again within the first ten years. A highlight in the club's history is Ingrid Wendel's admission to the national team and her participation in the 1970 World Gymnastics Championships in Ljubljana and the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich.

As part of the tennis boom , the tennis department was founded in 1977; a volleyball department was formed in the same year. In 1978 800 members were counted in the association, so that another hall expansion was considered. In 1981, when construction began to expand the hall, the service wing was torn down and the hall was extended by seven meters above the neighboring schoolyard to the street. The old syringe house had to give way to the extension. Just in time for the 1982 carnival campaign, the hall was inaugurated with a meeting of the long-term tenant Mombacher Carneval association “Die Bohnebeitel”.

The 1000th member was officially admitted to the 1983 General Assembly. Only two years later, the club grew to become the club with the largest number of members in its district with 1,130 gymnasts and athletes. The trend towards more health and fitness sports was taken into account early on in the MTV offer. In 1993 the first full-time certified sports teacher was hired. In 1994 it became necessary to expand the space again and the gymnastics hall that had been built a few years earlier was increased.

In 2003 the association already had three full-time certified sports teachers. The merger of MTV with TSG Eintracht Mombach became a challenging project at the beginning of the new millennium. The different characters of the “farmers 'association” and “workers' association” had to be brought together, which was also successful. The last hall expansion was completed in 2009 with a lot of personal work. In 2011 the Eintrachthalle was made accessible with the installation of an elevator.
