Monica Juma (* 1954 ) is a Kenyan diplomat and politician . She has been Minister of Defense of the Republic of Kenya since January 2020 .

Life

Juma graduated from the University of Nairobi for her BA and MA and the University of Oxford , graduating in refugee studies and where she also received her PhD in Philosophy .

Juma has had a long career in the diplomatic service, having served as Kenya's Ambassador to Ethiopia , Djibouti , the African Union , the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) Based in Addis Ababa .

On 27 June 2013, it was as Chief Secretary ( Principal Secretary sworn) in the Kenyan Ministry of Defense, where she was instrumental in strengthening the business process systems in the ministry, clarifying the strategic direction and strengthen the professional reputation of the Kenyan armed forces. After this position, she was transferred to the Kenyan Ministry of the Interior as chief secretary. She was the chief secretary in the Department of Home Affairs, Ministry of Interior and National Government Coordination, where she led a team that reforms and transforms the national security policy, architecture and operations within the national administration, immigration and registration departments by people and the national police service. She also initiated work that led to the development of the Kenyan strategy to counter terrorism and violent extremism and the creation of a multi-agency approach to addressing security challenges. Taken together, these measures have reduced Kenya's vulnerability to terrorist attacks and made remarkable improvements to security across the country. In addition, the efforts laid a solid foundation for the continuous improvement of public safety and protection of the population.

From January 2016 to February 2018 she was the main secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and from February 16, 2018 she was sworn in as cabinet secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In a cabinet reshuffle, she changed portfolios with Raychelle Omamo and became Kenya's Minister of Defense.

Juma is a Senior Research Fellow in the Political Science Department at the University of Pretoria in South Africa. She is also a faculty member at the African Center for Strategic Studies at the National Defense University in Washington DC in the United States of America. She has written and published extensively on the topics of her specialist field.

Juma is a married mother of two. Her husband is Peter Kagwanja , a political scientist who is also chairman of the board of the Nairobi think tank Africa Policy Institute .
