Morgan County is a county in the state of Alabama in the United States . The county seat is Decatur . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in northern Alabama, about 70 km from Tennessee and has an area of ​​1,552 square kilometers, of which 44 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Madison County , Marshall County , Cullman County , Lawrence County, and Limestone County .

history

Morgan County was formed from land of the Cherokee Indians on February 6, 1818 and was first named Cotaco County , after Cotaco Creek that runs through the county. On June 14, 1821, it was renamed Morgan County in honor of General Daniel Morgan , who was from the Province of New Jersey . Morgan fought the Pontiac uprising as a lieutenant and later the Shawnee and Mingo under John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore . In the American Revolutionary War he rose to the rank of brigadier general and fought in the Battle of Cowpens and Saratoga , among others . He later commanded troops during the Whiskey Rebellion and had a seat in the House of Representatives for two years .

Somerville was the district capital until 1891 , after which it became Decatur. The courthouse was completely destroyed by fire in 1926 and 1938.

Morgan County had a population of 111,064 as of the 2000 census . Of these, 1,707 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 43,602 households and 31,437 families. The population density was 74 inhabitants per square kilometer. 25.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.4 percent between 18 and 24, 30.1 percent between 25 and 44, 23.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.3 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 96.2 males and for females aged 18 and over there were 93.5 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 37,803 , and the median income for a family is $ 45,827. Males had a median income of $ 35,759 versus $ 21,885 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,223. 9.7 percent of families and 12.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
