Morgan Neville (born October 10, 1967 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American film producer , director and screenwriter .

Life

Neville grew up in Los Angeles, California and studied at the University of Pennsylvania . He first worked as a journalist in New York and San Francisco. In 1993 he started working as a film producer. He made his directorial debut in 1995 with the documentary Shotgun Freeway: Drives thru Lost LA . Other documentaries followed, including about Muddy Waters , Johnny Cash and the legendary record company Stax Records . He was also nominated for a Grammy for these three films .

On March 2, 2014, he and the two producers Gil Friesen and Caitrin Rogers won the Oscar for best documentary film with 20 Feet from Stardom .
