Morogoro is one of the 31 regions in Tanzania , the seat of administration is in the city of Morogoro . The region borders the Manyara and Tanga regions in the north, the Pwani and Lindi regions in the east, the Ruvuma and Njombe regions in the south, and the Iringa and Dodoma regions in the west .

The Morogoro region has a size of 70,624 square kilometers and around 2.2 million inhabitants (as of 2012). It is the second largest region of Tanzania after Tabora . The area is divided into three zones:

• Plains: Large parts of the Kilombero district are below 300 meters above sea level, as are the valleys of the Luwegu and Luhombero rivers.
• Plateau: The plateau lies between 300 and 600 meters above sea level and includes the Kilosa district and large parts of the central and southern region.
• Highlands: The highlands include non-contiguous areas over 600 meters, such as the Nguru Mountains in the north, the Udzungwa mountain range in the central part and the Ubena Mountains east of the city of Morogoro. The highest peaks are the Uluguru and the Kimhondu , both over 2600 meters high.

There are two rainy seasons in Morogoro, one lasts from October to mid-January, the second from February to late May. The annual rainfall is between 600 millimeters in the lowlands and 1200 millimeters in the highlands. Because of this high rainfall, there are 143 rivers that carry water all year round. The climate is tropical, Aw according to the effective climate classification .

history

In 1961, when Tanganyika gained independence, what is now Morogoro was part of the Eastern Province, along with Dar es Salaam and the coastal area. A year later, the Morogoro region was founded, it consisted of the three districts of Morogoro, Kilosa and Ulanga.

The Morogoro region is divided into seven districts and nine councils:

Mainly Waluguru, Wasagara, Wakaguru, Wandamba and Wapogoro live in the region. The population pyramid shows a gender distribution of 97 men for 100 women, with the ratio in the country 99: 100 and in the city 93: 100. The proportion of illiterate people over five is 28 percent. While 86 percent can read and write in urban areas, it is only 65 percent in rural areas (as of 2012).

Facilities and services

• Education: There are 879 primary schools in the region, 840 are state-run and 39 are private. Of the 336 secondary schools, 181 are public schools and 55 are private schools. The number of pupils in the first grade of primary school rose from 43,909 in 2016 to 82,795 in 2018. This year there were 58 pupils for one teacher.
• Health: Thirteen hospitals and 56 health centers are available to provide medical care for the population. Nine of the hospitals are privately owned and sixteen of the health centers. There are 325 pharmacies in the region. 336 centers have been set up specifically for mothers with children, offering pregnancy examinations, obstetrics, postnatal care and advice on contraception. While there were 125 deaths per 100,000 births in 2016, this figure fell to 106.5 in 2018.
• Water supply: In January 2019, 69 percent of the population had access to clean and safe water.

The most important industry in the region is agriculture, three quarters of the population live from it.

Agriculture

The region has more than two million hectares of arable land, forty percent of which is cultivated. Mainly maize, rice, millet, cassava, sweet potatoes, beans and bananas are grown for personal use, almonds, sunflowers, cashew nuts, cotton, fruit and vegetables are intended for sale. The production could be increased significantly in the period from 2016 to 2018:

Of the 500,000 households in the region, nearly 200,000 kept livestock, 16 percent of urban residents and 84 percent of rural residents. The main domestic animals were poultry and cows. In 2017, 6.6 million liters of milk were produced from January to November and 340,000 pallets of eggs were sold. fishing The center of fishing is the Kilombero River. Across the country, however, only half a percent of households are engaged in fishing. tourism Although there are some tourist attractions, there is little tourism. The best known are the Mikumi National Park and the Selous Game Reserve.

• Railway: Two important railway lines run through the region. The Tanganyika Railway , which runs from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma and further across Tanzania to the west, runs through the town of Mororogo and also has a train station in Kilosa , where a branch line branches off to the south. The second line connects Dar es Salaam with Mbeya in the southwest of the republic. The line from Dar es Salaam to Mororgoro will be converted to electrified standard gauge (as of 2019).
• Roads: The Tanzam Highway , that is the national road T1, from Dar es Salaam to Zambia runs through the city of Morogoro. Here the national road T3 branches off to Dodoma. From Mikumi the T18 runs south through the region.

Attractions

• Mikumi National Park: The 3230 square kilometer national park has a great variety of wildlife and also offers walking safaris. You can see hippos, zebras, giraffes, elephants, impalas, wildebeests, hyenas, buffalos and lions.
• Selous Game Reserve: The national park, which covers a total of 50,000 square kilometers, is located in the southeast of the region and also extends over the Lindi and Ruvuma regions. It is the largest uninhabited area in Africa, where thousands of elephants can be seen migrating each year and millions of wildebeest populate the plateau. The rare wild dogs can also be seen here.
• Udzungwa National Park: This mountain park is 1990 square kilometers and is located in the west on the border with the Iringa region. It offers hikes in pristine forests, waterfalls and heights of up to 2500 meters.
