Mount Macdonald Tunnel (construction train)

The Mount Macdonald Tunnel is a rail tunnel in the Canadian province of British Columbia and part of the Montreal - Vancouver transcontinental railroad . It is located near Rogers Pass in the Selkirk Mountains and passes under Mount Macdonald . It was built by the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) to complement the nearby Connaught Tunnel built in 1916. Internally in CPR, the section in which the tunnel is located is called the Mountain Subdivision .

Construction work on the Mount Macdonald Tunnel began in 1984 and the first train ran in 1988. With a length of 14,724 meters, it is the second longest railway tunnel on the American continent (after Cuajone-El Sargento in Peru ).

Operations are normally regulated so that only westbound trains use the Mount Macdonald Tunnel, while trains eastbound use the 8.1 kilometer long Connaught Tunnel , 90 meters higher .
