Nordic Council Music Prize

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Nordic Council Music Prize is awarded annually by the Nordic Council , a forum for the Nordic countries .

The award, which is managed by the House of the North in the Faroese capital Tórshavn , is awarded annually at the Nordic Council meeting in autumn, together with the film , literature, and nature and environment awards. He focuses on the creation and practice of novel music on a high artistic level. Every second year the prize is awarded to a work by a living composer, in the other year a musician or ensemble is honored. At 350,000 Danish kroner (47,000 euros), the music prize is just as endowed as the other prizes.

The prize was awarded for the first time in 1965 and was originally intended to be awarded every third year to a composer from the Nordic countries, but as early as 1968 the interval between the awarding of the prize had been reduced to two years. It has been awarded annually since 1990. The autonomous regions of Åland , Faroe Islands and Greenland have been able to propose their own candidates since 1997.

The jury is made up of an independent music expert from each of the five Nordic countries. If a proposal is submitted from one of the three autonomous areas, a representative from the corresponding area also has the right to be present at the jury.
