The 1958 NFL season was the 39th season of the National Football League (NFL). The regular season lasted from September 28th to December 14th. NFL champions were the Baltimore Colts , who were able to prevail in the NFL Championship Game on December 28 at the New York Giants with 23:17 after overtime.

The 1958 season is considered a turning point in American football history. For the first time, the NFL was able to catch up or overtake baseball in terms of popularity, also thanks to the exciting championship game.

On the other hand, the Chicago Cardinals franchise ran into financial problems due to competition from the Chicago Bears in the same city. The owner therefore sought, among other things, to improve the situation by relocating the team headquarters.

Regular season

The Baltimore Colts won the first six games, setting themselves apart from the other teams in the west early on. Two game days before the end they could not be overtaken with nine wins in one defeat and thus secured the conference title despite two defeats at the end. The Eastern Conference was consistently led by the Cleveland Browns. On the last day of the match there was a direct duel with the only pursuer, the New York Giants. With a victory, the Giants caught up with the Browns and thus forced a playoff in which the Giants also prevailed.
