Nadine Conner

Nadine Conner (born Evelyn Nadine Henderson ; born February 20, 1907 in Compton , California , † March 1, 2003 in Los Alamitos ) was an American opera singer (soprano).

Conner studied singing at the University of South California with Amado Fernandez and Horatio Cogswell and took lessons in New York with Florence Easton . She first appeared as a singer on various radio stations before she was a member of Albert Coates ' California Opera Company from 1939 to 1941 . From 1941 to 1960 she was engaged as a lyric soprano at the Metropolitan Opera . She made her debut there as Pamina in Mozart's Magic Flute under the direction of Bruno Walter and performed as Gilda in Rigoletto , Micaela in Carmen , Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro , Saline in Don Giovanni , Marguerite in Gounod's Faust , Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia , Mimi in La Bohème , Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi and Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier .

Between 1945 and 1948 she also appeared at the Opera of San Francisco . From 1953 she made guest appearances in Europe at opera houses in England, France, Belgium and Italy. In 1955 she sang Lucy in Gian Carlo Menotti's The Telephone and Monica in his opera The Medium at the Teatro Comunale in Florence . In 1942 she sang the soprano solo part in Gustav Mahler's Second Symphony with the New York Philharmonic under the direction of Bruno Walter, who won her for the annual performances of Bach's St. Matthew Passion . In 1947 she sang the title roles with Risë Stevens in a complete recording of Engelbert Humperdinck's opera Hansel and Gretel . From 1970 Conner lived as a singing teacher in Cypress, Southern California.
