Nahr an-Nil ( Arabic نهر النيل, German Nile River ) is a federal state of Sudan .
It has an area of 122,123 km², a population of 1,027,534 (2006 calculation) and its capital is ad-Damir .
geography
The name of the state is derived from the Nile , which initially flows northwards, taking in the Atbara river at Atbara and then turning to the southwest. Parts of the state have been flooded by the Merowe Dam since August 2006 .
Part of the Nubian Desert is in Nahr an-Nil.

history
From 1919 to 1974 the area of what is now the state of Nahr an-Nil was both part of the province of ash-Shamaliyya and part of the province of Kassala . In 1974 these parts were combined into the province of Nahr an-Nil. In 1991, the Nahr an-Nil province was dissolved again and assigned to the new states of ash-Shamaliyya and ash-Sharqiyya . On February 14, 1994, these parts were combined again, but this time as a federal state.
