It was because of their 2015 published homeopathy critical book Rethinking Homeopathy - What really helps patients known nationwide, especially because they had previously been practicing homeopath. Since 2016 she has been on the Science Council and since January 2017 communications manager of the Society for the Scientific Investigation of Parasciences (GWUP) . She has also been a member of the Advisory Board of the Giordano Bruno Foundation since May 2017 and the Advisory Board of the Hans Albert Institute since February 2020. Natalie Grams has been honorary vice-president of the Humanist Press Service (hpd) e. V.

Life

Grams grew up in Bavaria , graduated from high school in 1997 and then studied human medicine at the University of Munich , the Technical University of Munich and the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg , where she obtained her license to practice medicine in 2005 . In 2007 Grams received his doctorate from the medical faculty of the University of Zurich . Until 2009 she was an assistant doctor at the Agaplesion Bethanien Hospital Heidelberg in the field of geriatrics and palliative medicine .

Parallel to her medical training, Grams began training in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Homeopathy in 2004 . She completed her homeopathic training with the additional medical qualification homeopathy and worked purely as a homeopathic private doctor from 2009 to 2015.

In May 2015 Springer Verlag published her book Homeopathy Rethought - What really helps patients . In the same year she gave up her homeopathic practice. Currently Grams is active in the field of science communication and as a freelance writer.

Critical position on homeopathy / pseudomedicine

Grams is an exponent of the public discourse on homeopathy and pseudomedicine. As a practicing homeopathic doctor, Grams was interviewed by journalists Christian Weymayr and Nicole Heißmann for research on their book Die Homeopathie-Lüge (published in 2012). The criticism of homeopathy in the book that was then published led Grams to plan to write a replica from a homeopathic point of view.

The research on this and the intensive study of scientific results on homeopathy led Grams to revise their own views. The book Homeopathy rethought - what really helps patients, which was then published in May 2015, was therefore not the planned defense, but a critical examination of homeopathy. This applies in particular to the claim of homeopathy to be a specific drug therapy.

For Grams, this led to the personal consequence of giving up her own homeopathic private practice and thus her previous economic existence. Grams stated that he no longer wanted to offer patients therapies that they could not fully support. She justifies this with the scientific evidence that does not justify viewing homeopathy as a specifically effective drug therapy (see also "Marburg Declaration" ). Although she discusses positive aspects of the homeopathic setting, which in a certain way offers the patient help through affection on a low psychological inhibition and entry threshold in the sense of a "speaking medicine" , she also explains that the continued existence of a medically localized therapy at best is based on such Base is conceivable. However, this aspect has not been taken up by the homeopathic scene but has been rejected, what in the foreword to the 2nd edition of " Homeopathy rethought " by Grams himself as "missing the original and honest intention to build a bridge between homeopathy and its critics build ", is called. The ongoing discourse is largely determined by the adherence of the homeopathic scene to the existence of a specific drug therapy.

The response to Grams 'position in the print media, radio and television has been a major factor in the intensification of the public discourse on homeopathy since 2015. One of the focal points of Grams' criticism is the reimbursement of homeopathic services by statutory health insurances, articles on which appeared by her and others. a. at Vice and at Bento .

Grams is a diverse author and gives lectures on your concerns. At Spektrum der Wissenschaft she writes a regular column entitled "Grams' Office Hours".

Grams' activities were also reported in other European countries. A review article written by Grams together with the philosopher Nikil Mukerji appeared in the journal Brain & Spirit , was taken over by ZeitOnline and also appeared in translation in the Spanish sister journal of Brain & Spirit " Investigacion y scienca ". In the journal "Science et Pseudo-Science" of the French skeptic society AFIS, a report on Grams and their activities critical of homeopathy appeared in 2018. She was interviewed about criticism of homeopathy by the French edition of the news service 20minutes in October 2017. In March 2018 she also gave an expert interview for a TV documentary on homeopathy produced by the Italian broadcaster RAI3 as part of the "Presa diretta" series.

Grams sees the criticism of homeopathy in particular and of methods and means of pseudomedicine without evidence in general as a means to the path to "better medicine" that is to be anchored in the health system in a science-oriented and patient-centered manner. An essential aspect here is an increased focus on the patient in daily medical practice. This intention also determines her second book " Health - A book not without side effects " , published in 2017 . In addition to criticizing pseudomedicine, Grams wants this book to be understood as a "plea for better medicine overall" in the sense of a stronger patient orientation.

further activities

Together with the author and homeopathic critic Norbert Aust, Grams launched the information network Homeopathy - INH in 2016 , which she was in charge of until 2020. The aim of the information network is the dissemination of generally understandable information about homeopathy and its basics.

Grams is a member of the " Münsteraner Kreis ", an interdisciplinary group of experts, which was initiated by Bettina Schöne-Seifert , professor of medical ethics at the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster (WWU). came together with the aim of taking a critical look at pseudomedical methods within the health care of the population. Grams is co-author of the previous publications of the Münster Circle, the Münster Memorandum Heilpraktiker and the Münster Memorandum Homeopathy. She has been a member of the scientific advisory board of the Hans Albert Institute since 2020. Since January 2020 she has been publishing the podcast "Grams' office hour - the podcast for good medicine" together with the medical lawyer Christian Nobmann on Detector.fm .

Legal dispute

Grams was established in May 2019 from the company Hevert drugs by omission explanation prompted not publicly say homeopathy THAT CONDITION "not about the placebo effect also." Grams made the letter public and announced not to sign it. She justified this by simply presenting the state of the art . The case triggered an intensive discussion about the usefulness of homeopathic treatments in general and the special rules in German pharmaceutical law in particular. In this context, the health politician Karl Lauterbach criticized the "business with the futile hope of the seriously ill" and brought a ban on reimbursement by health insurance companies into play. Also Jan Böhmermann sat in his mission Neo Magazine Royale in a minute 20 on post-critical approach to the subject.
