The National Library of Albania ( Albanian  Biblioteka Kombëtare e Shqipërisë ) in Tirana is the central scientific library in Albania .

history

The library was founded on July 10, 1920. The foundation of the Komisia Letrare Shqipe , an Albanian-Austrian association that was active in Shkodra as early as 1917, served as the basis . Shortly after its inauguration in 1922, the National Library was located in the Ministry of Education in Tirana. At that time it had an inventory of around 600 works. Up to this point in time there was an increase of around 150 titles a year, ten years later there was an average of 250. Until 1944, in addition to Tirana, Shkodra and Korça were also important publishing and printing locations.

The national library is housed in the south wing of the Kulturpalast (left).

The library is now housed in the Kulturpalast on Skanderbeg Square . It is the most important library in the country and has more than 1.1 million copies. The current inventory is growing by an average of around 20,000 library materials per year. The task of the national library includes indexing the holdings and making them available to readers and interested parties.

Digital library

The digitized catalog of the National Library of Albania is a catalog based on databases of digitized maps and accessible via the web or local data carriers. Digitization began in 1994. The online catalog of the National Library of Albania contains bibliographic records such as books , articles , maps , dissertations , magazines and audiovisual media , but also specific records of Albanian-language publications that were subsequently cataloged.

This catalog also contains digital images of manuscripts , antiquarian books, and maps from the 16th to 18th centuries . The current subject of the digitized materials was indexed with the Universal Decimal Classification . The project, which was started at the end of 1997, aims to digitize the card catalog of albanological and Balkan special collections.
