The Biokovo Nature Park ( Croatian Park prirode Biokovo ) is a protected landscape area in the Split-Dalmatia County in Croatia . The area was designated a nature park in 1981 due to its geomorphology , biodiversity and scenic beauty .
The park extends over an area of 19,550 hectares and encompasses a 30 km long and up to 7 km wide part of the Biokovo Mountains from Dubci to Gornja Igrane , which extends in a north-west-south-east direction . It includes the sub-areas of the cities of Makarska and Vrgorac and the municipalities of Baška Voda , Brela , Podgora , Šestanovac , Tučepi , Zadvarje and Zagvozd . The park is at an altitude of 200 to 1762 m. i. J .; the Sveti Jure ( Saint George ) as the highest mountain in the park is also the second highest peak in Croatia.
The Kotišina Botanical Garden is located in the park on the slope above the village of the same name . Biokovo has a lot of typical karst phenomena to offer: sinkholes , naturally formed hollows , caves , ice pits and grottos . The deepest is the 788 meter deep Amfora , the fourth deepest cave in Croatia .
At first glance, Biokovo appears poor and barren, but it is home to around 1500 plant and numerous animal species, including 7 protected amphibian species , 21 reptile species , over 100 bird species and 13 rare, protected and endangered species of bats . In addition to jungle-like forests with beech, fir and black pines , endemic plant species such as Edraianthus pumilio , Centaurea biokovensis and Centaurea cuspidata can be found . The fauna of Biokovo is peculiar and diverse, also with endemic species and tertiary relics. The underground fauna is represented with 60 endemic from there a total of 199 species.
A multitude of traces refer to the life of the people in the mountains, such as the archaeological remains, the small churches, chapels and shepherds' quarters. In addition to the hiking trails, a 23-kilometer road leads to the summit of Sveti Jure, which is also the highest paved road in Croatia.
