The Mecklenburg Elbe Valley Nature Park was a nature park in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . It existed with the regulation fixing the natural park "Mecklenburgisches Elbetal" of 5 February 1998 to 31 January 2015. He was part of the 400 river kilometer UNESCO - Biosphere Reserve Biosphere Reserve Riverine Landscape Elbe to the five states of Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg, Lower Saxony, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein belong.

The nature park was on the right bank of the Elbe at Elbe km 502–511 and 555–565 and between the state borders of Schleswig-Holstein and Brandenburg . Within the area are the places Boizenburg / Elbe , Lübenheen and Dömitz .

It was brought into being on May 15, 1990 with a provisional safeguarding of the Schwerin district assembly as a 1,222 km² nature reserve "Mecklenburg Elbe Valley". After the reunification of Germany and the associated state formation as well as the later reorganization of communities, large parts of the planned nature park came to Brandenburg and Lower Saxony. Finally, it was set with an area of ​​426 km² on February 5, 1998 by a state ordinance.

Natural equipment

The original river landscape of the Elbe river with its tributaries Schaale , Sude , Krainke , Rögnitz , Löcknitz and the Müritz-Elde waterway was characteristic and decisive for the protection . Special features were the inland dune areas with dry sand , forests and heaths, as well as the steep banks of the Elbe near Boizenburg (Vier) and Rüterberg (Dömitz), which offered a panoramic view of the Elbe from the observation towers.

Current protection status

With the ordinance of the “Law on the Biosphere Reserve River Landscape Elbe-Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ” of January 15, 2015 with publication on January 23, 2015 in the Law and Ordinance Gazette of the State of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, a large part of the nature park was protected as a biosphere reserve under state law. Since February 1, 2015, is UNESCO -Biosphärenreservat Elbe River Landscape Mecklenburg-Vorpommern together with the Schaalsee Biosphere Reserve Office Schaalsee - Elbe based in Zarrentin am Schaalsee managed.
