Neil Armstrong (referee)

Neil Armstrong (* 23. December 1932 in Plympton , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey - referee in the National Hockey League (NHL).

Armstrong began his career in 1957 and participated in more games than Gordie Howe . A total of 1,744 in 22 years.

In his youth he started to play normal ice hockey, although it was clear that he would not be able to play in the NHL. However, the opportunity arose to become a referee and so he was able to work in this league. He rose very quickly and was honored in 1973 in Detroit for directing his 1314th game and breaking the record previously held by George Hayes .

In 1978 he retired from active sports and became a talent scout with the Montréal Canadiens . His son Doug is currently the general manager of the St. Louis Blues .

His service to the sport was recognized in 1991 with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame .
