Nelson F. Adkins
Nelson Frederick Adkins (born February 3, 1897 in Hartford, Connecticut ; died July 27, 1976 in New York ) was an American literary scholar who excelled primarily with work on American literature of the late 18th and early 19th centuries .
Adkins studied at Trinity College in his hometown Hartford ( AB 1920, AM 1921) and at Yale University ( Ph.D. 1925). In 1924 he began teaching at New York University , to which he remained lifelong. In 1931 he was first assistant professor, then in 1952 full professor of American literature; In 1970 he retired.
