Neustift an der Lafnitz ( Hungarian : Lapincsújtelek , Roma: Nuschtifa ) is a market town in the Oberwart district in Burgenland in Austria with 812 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020).
geography
The community is located in southern Burgenland. Neustift an der Lafnitz is the only place and cadastral municipality in the municipality and covers 3.5 km².

history
Like all of Burgenland, the place belonged to Hungary (German-West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Lapincsújtelek be used. After the end of the First World War , after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ).
On January 1st, 1971 the municipalities of Neustift an der Lafnitz, Grafenschachen and Kroisegg were merged to form the municipality of Grafenschachen, but this merger was dissolved on January 1st, 1990 and Neustift an der Lafnitz became an independent municipality again. On April 4, 2007 the market survey of Neustift an der Lafnitz took place.

mayor
Johann Kremnitzer (SPÖ) has been mayor since 1990. This makes him the longest-serving SPÖ mayor in Burgenland. In the direct election of the mayor on October 1, 2017, Kremnitzer was confirmed in office with 75.20%. He received 5.93 percentage points more votes than his SPÖ. His competitor Bernhard Wappel (ÖVP) achieved 24.80%.
