The Nichols Bridgeway is a pedestrian bridge in Chicago . The bridge begins in Millennium Park , crosses Monroe Street and ends on the third floor of the West Pavilion of the Art Institute of Chicago . The bridge opened on May 16, 2009.

history

The bridge was designed by Renzo Piano , the architect of the West Pavilion. It is about 620 meters long and 15 meters wide. The substructure of the bridges consists of white, painted steel, the floor of non-slip, heated aluminum planks.

The bridge is named after Alexandra and John Nichols, famous sponsors of the museum. The design of the bridge was influenced by the shape of a ship's hull .

construction

The Nichols Bridgeway was part of the Art Institute of Chicago's master plan. Construction began in September 2007 and ended on April 8, 2009. The official opening was on May 16, 2009. In June 2009, the Structural Engineers Association of Illinois (SEAOI) awarded an award for Excellence in Engineering.

In the romantic comedy Forever Love , the leading actors from the Art Institute of Chicago walked down the Nichols Bridgeway to Millennium Park, where they kissed under the Cloud Gate .
