Niederzwehren is the third largest district of Kassel in terms of area . Dorothea Viehmann , the fairy tale wife of the Brothers Grimm, lived in Niederzwehren .

geography

To the north, Niederzwehren in the direction of Park Schönfeld and Wehlheiden is bounded by the connection of the Waldkappeler Bahn branching off to Wilhelmshöhe.

In the Märchenviertel, the Grunnelbach also flows from the Brasselsberg to the Giesewiesen below the Neue Mühle .

history

Niederzwehren was mentioned in a document as early as 1074 (as Tweron in the inventory of Hasungen Monastery ), and in 1207 as Tweren . The name Niederzwehren was ultimately created to distinguish it from the neighboring town of Oberzwehren , which is also a district of Kassel today.

In the course of its history, the village was destroyed and rebuilt several times, for example in 1402 due to the disputes between the Archbishop of Mainz and the Hessian landgraves and later during the Thirty Years War .

During the time of the Napoleonic Kingdom of Westphalia (1807-1813) Niederzwehren was the administrative seat of the canton of Zwehren .

The previously independent community of Niederzwehren was incorporated into the city of Kassel in 1936.

Originally a farming village, Niederzwehren increasingly developed into an industrial location in the 20th century. Among other things, the wagon factory Gebrüder Credé stood at the current location of a large shopping complex that was opened there in 1968. Until the trumpet was rebuilt in Oberneustadt, the company's former administration building housed the city of Kassel's music academy .

In the course of the redevelopment of the district in the late 1960s, Frankfurter Strasse was widened from 1973 onwards at the site of the town center. A large part of the once village structure fell victim to this urban renewal, which was promoted as an expansion .

Niederzwehren was connected to the Kassel tram network as early as 1913.

Until the 1990s, the Kurhessenhalle for riding and sporting events as well as flea markets existed on the current site of W. & L. Jordan GmbH .

In the outskirts of Niederzwehren there are two military cemeteries in the immediate vicinity, the Niederzwehren Cemetery for the fallen Commonwealth soldiers of the First World War and one for Soviet soldiers.

district

The Graf-Haeseler barracks in the direction of Dennhausen has been transformed in recent years and now houses a small collection of different businesses and institutions, as well as a mosque. Behind it is the “Am Keilsberg” settlement.

traffic

Frankfurter Strasse is characteristic of the Niederzwehren district. It was widened in the early 1970s at the “Dennhäuser Strasse” stop at the junction to Fuldabrück in the south and Korbacher Strasse to the west. Overall, the district is characterized by high through traffic, which leads from the city center in the direction of Oberzwehren and to Baunatal (VW plant) as well as to the concentration points, especially the DEZ shopping center.

In the north of Niederzwehren there was a separate station "Niederzwehren" from 1880 to 1985. In the direction of Süsterfeld there is still the Main-Weser-Bahn embankment and the high-speed line from Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe to Fulda-Würzburg has existed since 1991. The district is currently connected by a direct tram connection with the municipality of Baunatal in the south, the city center and the northern districts of Kassel and Frommershausen (Vellmar).
