The Untereustadt district is located east of the city center of Kassel on the east bank of the Fulda . Beyond this river it borders to the north on the Wesertor district and to the north-northeast on Wolfsanger-Hasenhecke . In the northeast it abuts east of Kassel port of Sandershausen , a municipality Niestetal ; there, the final section of the lower reaches of the Losse forms the natural delimitation of the Kassel urban area. In the east and south-east, the Untereustadt joins the Bettenhausen district , to which a part of the lower reaches of the Wahle forms the natural boundary. In the south it borders on Waldau and thus on the Fuldaaue and in the south-west on the southern part of the Fulda . In the west, between the roundabout and the Fulda bridge , it meets the Mitte district , which is also on the other side of the Fulda and essentially comprises the Kassel city center.

Townscape

The partly densely built district Unterneustadt is located in the eastern part of the flat articulated Kassel Fulda - lowland . Its undeveloped northern part, in which the city's harbor is also located, includes meadows and arable land around which the Fulda river flows to the north. South of the Harbor Bridge , the district is densely built and a little further south and south of Fulda Bridge was built in 1997 on the former exhibition center a development area, to the south and east of the densely built Blucher quarter , an old town district of the district Unterneustadt followed. From there, the Waldauer footpath leads directly into the Fulda floodplains. To the east of this part of the city there are two sports fields , and further east to the Platz der Deutschen Einheit and Messeplatz, where circuses and fairgrounds take place several times a year. In the past, this area was located on the southern new building area at Untereustädter Kirchplatz. Before the war, under the name "Leistersche Wiese" on the area of today's Platz der Deutschen Einheit . Beyond this traffic circle and thus further to the east is an industrial quarter with scrap and raw material yards and the premises of the municipal works . The south of the Untereustadt gradually turns into meadows and arable land and the already mentioned Fulda floodplain and in the southeast are the allotment garden colonies of the Fackelteich and Schwanenwiese associations .

The Untereustadt district is after the old town , which was completely destroyed in World War II , which was rebuilt with modern architecture after the war and has since been part of the Mitte district , the second oldest district of Kassel. It was planned as a separate city in 1283. The center was later the Holzmarkt with a church on the Untereustädter Kirchplatz , which was consecrated to St. Mary Magdalene . The town hall stood on the market square and church square . Like all new cities founded at that time, the Untereustadt had its own community and its own jurisdiction with an aldermen's college of six aldermen . In 1378 it was merged with the other two cities of Liberty and Old Town to form a single community. The boundaries of the Untereustadt have been expanded several times over the years.

Timetable

  • There were floods of the Fulda in 1643 "19 feet above the water level", 1688 ("sixteen feet"), 1763 (12 feet), 1799 ("13 1/2 feet") and on 17th / 18th. January 1841 ("12 feet"): "On January 17th and 18th we (...) had an unheard-of flood of water in Kassel." This is how JA Vogt, who was born in Untereustadt, reports it around 1845.
  • One change that also affected the access to the square and that led to the demolition of houses was the construction of the Wilhelmsbrücke over the Fulda in 1791–1794 and the demolition of the old bridge afterwards. "In the years 1791 and the two following years the Wilhelmsbrücke was built over the Fulda, and the crossing of the same opened on November 28th, 1794, and the beginning was made with the demolition of the old Fulda Bridge on December 4th, 1794", reports Vogt again .
  • "On December 3rd, 1794 the Untereustädter Church, which stood on the current so-called wood market, was demolished."
  • At the turn of the year 1925/26, the Untereustadt was hit by a strong flood, which reached its peak around noon on the first day of the new year. Some roads were only passable by boat or raft. Then two icebreakers were at the Fulda bridge demolished and the riverbed of Fulda ausgetieft in the bridge area, so that could be guaranteed a better flow there.
  • In World War II the districts and lying on the Fulda thus were Unterneustadt on May 17, 1943 struck again by a strong flood after the dam of Edersees was shortly before 2:00 destroyed in the morning by a British air raid, round followed by 160 million . water through the Eder - and Fuldatal Kassel on north to the Weser and the north Sea flowed. With the flood and mud wave, which peaked at around 3 p.m., animal carcasses, tree trunks and parts of houses drifted through the low-lying neighborhoods, causing great damage.
  • During the Second World War, the Untereustadt was almost completely destroyed in a bombing raid on the night of October 22nd to 23rd, 1943.
  • The area of the Untereustadt , which was destroyed by the Second World War and located south of the Fulda Bridge , was not rebuilt after the war; In 1950 this was converted into a trade fair site, where various folk festivals and trade fairs as well as circuses took place every year until the beginning of 1997, including the Zissel , Kassel's oldest and largest festival.
  • Since 1997 , a modern residential area has been built in the area of the former exhibition site, which has been south of the Fulda Bridge since 1950 (construction work is still ongoing). On the connected Karl Branner Bridge, pedestrians and cyclists can get to the Mitte district via the Fulda . The exhibition site was relocated to the Schwanenwiese , which is located in a flood basin in the Fulda valley, directly southwest of the Platz der Deutschen Einheit ; it was first used as such in September 1997.
  • In 2004 the citizens of Kassel founded a development association that wants to renovate and maintain the Jungborn spa, which is located in the Untereustadt on the Fuldaufer. It is one of the few testimonies of the old city that survived the destruction of the war. The Jungborn is the last of the many river baths formerly located on the Fulda, later became a warm bath and served as a medical bath until 1999. It is now to become a small museum for the bathing history of the city and serve as a club house for a water sports club.
