The Zissel - landmark on the roundabout: "D'r Häring is hanging!" (2005)

The Zissel is a folk festival in the city of Kassel ( Northern Hesse , Germany ). It is known as the great North Hessian homeland and water festival .

overview

The Kasseler Zissel has been held every year on the first weekend in August (Friday to Monday) since 1926. His password is: "Fullewasser, Fullewasser - hoi hoi hoi". The festival takes place on the Auedamm from the wire bridge to the south on the so-called Zisselmeile on the Fulda , on the southern part of the Karlswiese in the Karlsaue and at the pickaxe ( work of art created by Claes Oldenburg for documenta 6 ). At the festival there is a stage for live music, drinks and food stalls, carousels , lottery and shooting booths . Also between the Fulda and Hafenbrücke , for example on the river island Finkenherd , which is located at the Walzenwehr on the Fulda, and at the Kassel harbor , which extends beyond the harbor bridge, there is a celebration.

The festival is organized by the “Zissel in Kassel” association, the legal successor to the Zissel guild and the Zissel support group. Zisselkönigin, Zisselprinzessin and Fullenixe exercise their reigns during the folk festival. The symbol and emblem of the Zissel is the Zisselhäring , which is hung on the rondel in a festive ceremony for the Zissel opening . The call “Here is the Häring, hang it up!” Or “D'r Häring is hanging!” (Kasselän dialect) heralds the beginning of the festival.

Water pageant on the Fulda (2005)

The highlight of the Zissel is the water pageant , which takes place on Sunday lunchtime with decorated boats on the Fulda. Before that, the country festival procession is organized, which leads through parts of the city center to Schlagd , a ship landing stage on the Fulda. The torch-lit swim takes place on or in the Fulda on Saturday evening . At the end of the festival, a large fireworks display will be set off on Monday evening . After the end of each Zissel , the Zisselhäring is dismantled with a great ceremony:
"Now the runner gets the Häring on the beat - swim out into all the seas and proclaim that in 361 days Zissel will be in Kassel again".

Origin of name

The word Zissel does not appear in any German dictionary . Linguists have tried to interpret the word. But their efforts have remained unsuccessful to this day. This is how strange interpretations arose: The derivation from the Slavic goddess Ciselborga and / or the Roman martyr Cyriacus should be the basis of the word Zissel, but this does not stand up to any test. The assumption that the Zissel has its origins in a harvest festival by the Fulda fishermen also belongs in the world of legends . Possibly “zisseln” comes from the Low German : zisseln money to be happy and funny, so that the term Zissel stands for solemn activities and joie de vivre.

history

The beginning

Every water sports club in Kassel celebrated its own festival every year on the banks of the Fulda and on the Auedamm , a tradition in honor of the river that can be traced back to the 15th century.

1925 to 1932

In the clubhouse of the Schützenhaus on Bleichenweg , near the old town sluice, the idea arose in 1925 over a herring dinner from the regulars' table brothers , together with water sports enthusiasts, the municipal river pool, which at that time was built directly in the Fulda, contrary to today's Auebad, and the city of Kassel Organize a folk festival. A herring skeleton was ceremoniously handed over to the water of the flowing Fulda in a cigar box, with the words: "Swim into the world and announce to everyone in 365 days is in Kassel Zissel". Thus the idea of this Kassel folk festival was born and the Zisselhäring became its landmark.

The chisel was now brought from the baptism . Therefore, a Zisselrat was formed from business people and employees of the city of Kassel. There was also a guard , the Zisselgarde, consisting of association members, which has the task of symbolically protecting the Zisselrat during the Zissel.

Even from 1926 to 1932, which fell during the Weimar Republic , the Zissel was celebrated with the Zisselrat and the Zisselgarde mainly in the houses and on the grounds of the numerous water sports clubs on the Fulda. However, a beach party at the river pool and an evening fireworks display were held as early as 1926.

1933 to 1948

When the Nazi era began in 1933 , the Zissel was immediately changed to a local festival and some of it was relocated to the old town of Kassel . The Zisselgarde now consisted of SA men who marched in uniforms that were modeled on the former Kassel Citizens' Guard from 1831 and SA boots, which can still be seen in old photographs. The citizens of Kassel celebrated the Zissel with less and less participation . Even participation in the water pageant declined rapidly until the folk festival was canceled until 1948 due to the Second World War .

1949 to 1997

After the war, which left Kassel in ruins, at the time of the Federal Republic of Germany , which was newly founded on May 23, 1949, old and new Zisselans got together and decided to celebrate their Zissel again in the original way from 1950, with the event on took place on the grounds of the water sports clubs on the Fulda. A decisive drive came from actors in the Wehlheider court theater ; to name include: Willi Schmidt (theater director ), his sister Lizzi Bernhard, Walter Hermann Daume and Umbach (theater stage manager ).

The Zisselrat was newly formed and the Zisselgarde was reorganized with boys and girls from Kassel clubs. In recent times the Zisselgarde has become a minor matter of the Kassel show, dance and Musikzug ARGE Zisselgilde and completely disappeared as an independent guard.

When the completely destroyed area of the Untereustadt , which was located directly south of the Fulda Bridge , was not rebuilt after the Second World War and was converted into a trade fair center from 1950, the main event area of the Zissel and the Zissel moved there to an increasing extent over the years above-mentioned stands, carousels and booths. The wire bridge , which was opened in 1870, was or is connected to the festival area on the Auedamm on the other side of the Fulda . The Paul Heidelbach Medal was awarded for the first time in 1984 .

Since 1998

Since a modern residential area has been built on the former exhibition site since 1997, the main event site of the Zissel had to be relocated from 1998 at least initially to the newly built exhibition site on Schwanenwiese , which is located in a flood basin in the Fulda valley, directly southwest of the Platz der Deutschen Einheit . However, especially since the distance between this square and the festival area on Auedamm is very large and most of the visitors spend the evening on the Auedamm in particular , the newly created exhibition area, which was first used as such in September 1997, fell behind , at least with regard to the Zissels . Therefore, a new location had to be found for stands, carousels and booths, so that the southern part of Karlswiese in Karlsaue, not far from Auedamm , became the new exhibition site with regard to the Zissel . In 2007, the associations Zisselgilde eV and Zisselförderkreis eV were merged into the new association Zissel in Kassel eV by a resolution of the two general meetings on May 24, 2007 .
