The Niegripper Altkanal ( NAK ), at its western end formally referred to by the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration as the old route Ihlekanal near Niegripp ( AsIh ), is a waterway in central Saxony-Anhalt .

history

Construction work in 2020 on a culvert in the dam blocking the canal in the village of Niegripp

The Altkanal is a section of the former Ihlekanal , built between 1865 and 1872 , which connected the Plauer Canal with the Elbe northeast of Magdeburg . Three locks were built in the Ihle Canal, including the old Niegripp lock . The canal was expanded from 1883 to 1891 to a width of 26.00 meters and a depth of 2.00 meters, so that it can be used by ships up to a length of 65.00 meters, a width of 8.00 meters, a Draft of 1.60 meters and a load capacity of about 600 tons could be navigated.

Between 1926 and 1938 the Ihle Canal and the Plauer Canal were expanded to form the Elbe-Havel Canal over long stretches . The Elbe-Havel Canal does not follow the course of the previous buildings at all points. A straightened course was partly chosen. Furthermore, at the time of the construction of the Elbe-Havel Canal, the connection via the Magdeburg waterway intersection to the Mittelland Canal was planned. For this reason, the new canal ran south of the village of Niegripp . As part of the waterway cross, the Niegripper connecting canal with the new Niegripp lock was built to allow for a descent or ascent to the Elbe, depending on the water level, southwest of Niegripp . The new construction of the Elbe-Havel Canal resulted in several old canals, including the Niegripper Old Canal and the old Ihle Canal near Niegripp, the western end of the former Ihle Canal.

The old lock Niegripp was closed and the old canal lost its importance. The canal was again heavily used from 1954 onwards due to gravel mining in Lake Niegripper . The canal was severely damaged in the process, the trapezoidal profile slipped together to form a flat trough profile . Maintenance work was insufficient. In 1976, the Niegripper See was cut through to the Elbe-Havel Canal, so that the Niegripper Alt Canal once again lost its importance for commercial shipping. Finally, from 1977 to 1978 near the entrance of the Elbe-Havel Canal in the bed of the old sewer Niegripper a dam piled and he was so cut off from direct access to the Elbe-Havel Canal and the direct exchange of water. The water was only used by pleasure boats.

In the course of renovation work in the canal, the dam that separated the old canal from the Elbe-Havel canal was removed again in 2014. The bank was then paved with stones and the canal was dredged back to a depth of two meters. In total, the canal was renovated in four construction phases up to the old lock. The renovation work was completed in 2018. In March 2020, work began on a culvert within the framework of the European Water Framework Directive in the area of the dam blocking the cross-section of the sewer in Niegripp .

From the direction of the Elbe-Havel Canal, the Niegripper Altkanal is a federal waterway in the area of responsibility of the outskirts of Genthin of the Brandenburg Waterways and Shipping Office up to the level of the formerly existing, locking dam . According to the signs, access from the Elbe-Havel Canal is only permitted for sports and leisure boating or with individual permits. The maximum permissible speed opposite the bank is 6 km / h . From the level of the former dam that blocks the canal, the canal is a state waterway . From the start of the Landeswasserstraße, the height is limited to 3.80 meters due to a bridge spanning the canal. Driving with jet skis is prohibited in the area of the Landeswasserstraße .

The canal has a second access from Lake Niegripper. The Niegripper Altkanal is navigable from the direction of the Elbe-Havel-Kanal or Niegripper See as far as the crossing of the state road 52. Instead of a bridge, this is led over a heaped embankment that blocks the canal profile. Another dam was raised in the chamber of the old lock. The canal is not navigable between the two dams. Below the old Niegripp lock, the old canal is basically navigable as a federal road from the Elbe under the name Old Ihle Canal near Niegripp. However, according to the traffic signs ("except WSA"), entry into the canal is only permitted for watercraft of the Waterways and Shipping Office. It is prohibited for all other watercraft. The old Ihlekanal route near Niegripp is the responsibility of the Magdeburg Waterways and Shipping Office .
