Location of Nienhagen in the city area

Nienhagen ( Low German : Nüjjen ) is a district of Detmold in the Lippe district in North Rhine-Westphalia and is located about five kilometers northwest of the city center. The neighboring Detmold districts are clockwise Niewald , Jerxen-Orbke , Heidenoldendorf , Pivitsheide VH and Pivitsheide VL Nienhagen was probably founded as Hagenhufendorf in the 12th or 13th century. At this time, numerous such settlements were built on clearings in the wooded hill country of the Lippe. Over the centuries, the place, initially called Niggenhagen, changed its name several times.

The sovereign ruler Simon I von Lippe, who ruled at the end of the 13th century, wanted to prevent the farmer's sons who were left without court inheritance, like hundreds of others, from emigrating to the Baltic States . He promised them a hoof of land if they stayed at home. This land was near a stream or river for water supply and had to be cleared so that the new farmers could support their families. This is how Nienhagen came into being, like other villages in the area. The farms lay on a strip of land one to two kilometers long and 200 meters wide, like a string of pearls, next to each other on the banks of the Werre. To protect against flooding, the farms were built on a rocky hill. After the adjacent, enclosed fields behind the farmsteads, the settlement was called Hagenhufendorf . This arrangement of the fields can still be seen today.

Until 1703, all students from Nienhagen, together with those from Pivitsheide VH and Orbke, had to make the long way to school in Heiden. After that, they built their own Nienhagener school in Akemeiers Hof. In 1803 a new school was built in Nienhagen, in which the children from Pivitsheide VH and Orbke were also taught. In 1968 the Nienhagen primary school was closed again due to the division into elementary and secondary school. Since then the primary school students have been going to school in Pivitsheide VH and the secondary school students in Heidenoldendorf.

On January 1, 1970, Nienhagen was incorporated into the district town of Detmold.

Until 1988 Nienhagen was a station on the Herford – Himmighausen railway line . In the course of the last few decades the management of most of the farms has ceased. A total of 346 citizens live in Nienhagen on an area of 3.6 km² (August 2006). The local mayor is currently Martin Akemeier ( SPD ), the representative in the city council is Wolfgang Köster (SPD).
