Location of Schönemark in the urban area

Schönemark is a district of Detmold in the Lippe district in North Rhine-Westphalia and is located about five kilometers southeast of the city center. The neighboring districts of Detmold are Hornoldendorf , Remmighausen and Diestelbruch in a clockwise direction . It was first in 1350 as Sconemark and Schirmark mentioned. Schönemark emerged from a forest hoof settlement . The land transferred by the sovereign was close to a stream or river, in this case on the Strangbach, to provide sufficient water supply, and had to be cleared so that the new farmers could feed their families. The name of the village appears three times in old court files (1730, 1746 and 1765) when Knight von Hammerstein from Hornoldendorf went to court in Wetzlar to sue the farmers who did not follow his instructions. In 1890 there were more than thirty full-time farms in Schönemark.

On January 1, 1970, Schönemark was incorporated into the district town of Detmold. The neighboring village of Wilberg belonged to Schönemark until 1969, but is now a district of Horn-Bad Meinberg . The 4.5 km² district of Schönemark has some well-preserved half-timbered buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries with inscriptions above the arches and currently has 229 inhabitants. Local mayor is currently Thomas Trappmann ( FDP ), the representative in the city council is Klaus Brand (SPD).
