Since 2010, the night subway has been an integral part of Vienna's night network on the nights before Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

The NightLine is a night traffic network in Vienna that operates between 0:30 am and 5:00 am .

On the nights before Saturday, Sunday and public holidays, all five underground lines run every 15 minutes, 17 night bus lines of Wiener Linien every 30 minutes, 8 on- call bus lines if required and some courses on the "casino bus line " 360 to Baden . On the remaining nights, 18 night bus routes (four of which circumnavigate the city center) run every 30 minutes, 10 on-call bus routes and the 360 route to Baden.

In order to ensure safety in the subway area at night, only continuous (except U6) and video-monitored sets are used.

On weekends, a S-Bahn night service on the main route and further to Mödling and on the suburban line complements the NightLine network.

history

Night bus networks existed in Vienna many decades ago. In the post-war period, nine lines ran between Stephansplatz and the outskirts, which were converted to daily operation in 1955. These lines were discontinued in 1970, after which there was no public transport in Vienna at night for around 16 years.

On June 28, 1986, a new night bus service went into operation. The lines N1 to N8 ran on Saturday and Sunday nights, starting from Schwedenplatz , at 30-minute intervals through the various districts of Vienna. The fare was a uniform 25  shillings (today, adjusted for inflation, the equivalent of around 3.50 euros ), which was a higher tariff at that time than for a single journey during the day. The tickets were only available at the machines installed in the buses and at the sales counter on Schwedenplatz that was open on the nights in question. In 1994 the hourly line N11 between Kagran and Eßling was created.

After a fundamental restructuring, the NightLine, which runs daily, started operations on October 26, 1995 with 22 lines. In January 1999 changes were made to the routes, and new, cheaper tariffs and strip tickets available in advance were introduced. Since June 2002 the NightLine tariff has been integrated into the uniform tariff of the Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region , which means that a regular ticket can be used for the journey and the use of the night buses is free for holders of season tickets. Adjustments were made again in March 2006, the number of lines was increased to 28, some of which, however, only run on weekends or daily as collective call taxis. The last three courses on bus line 360, operated by Wiener Lokalbahnen , have been added to the NightLine network. This runs from Vienna Opera via Vösendorf and the Shopping City Süd to Baden . So far, four night lines have been discontinued: N52 in spring 2000 and N72 (introduced with the 2nd reform) at the end of December 2007 as well as N50 and N58 in the course of the introduction of the night subway. During the EM 2008 the temporary line N1 ran along the Ringstrasse - two line and the Franz-Josefs-Kai.

The night lines drove once even in the morning, on May 1, 1998. After 1913-1997 interrupted by world wars and corporate state, the operation of transport services on May Day , began at the employees to give the opportunity after lunch to participate in the Maiaufmarsch , the municipal council decided from 1998 all-day traffic. The unions went across the street, so Wiener Linien commissioned four private bus companies to operate the night lines. From 1999 onwards there was a normal holiday schedule.

Since the beginning of 2007, ticket controls have been carried out by so-called Nightliners in the NightLine buses . These sell passengers who are found without a valid ticket or ID, tickets at the price of a normal single journey (price when purchased in the vehicle). However, the usual daytime penalty fee is not taken into account.

In February 2010 it was decided in the course of a referendum that the Vienna underground should run continuously on the nights before Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Since September 4th, all five underground lines have been running every 15 minutes on these nights. While the night bus network remained almost unchanged from Monday to Friday, the bus lines running parallel to the underground were shortened or discontinued on weekends, which also meant the end of the N50 and N58 lines. Since then, night buses no longer run around the ring on weekends.

In the summer of 2011, due to the partial closure of the U6 underground line, the replacement tram line "E" between Nussdorfer Straße and Westbahnhof also ran at night on weekends.

In the summer of 2012, due to the partial closure of the U1 line, there was again weekend night traffic by trams with the special line 68, which ran between Schwedenplatz and Reumannplatz.

Due to the corona pandemic , night operations of the subway on weekends were suspended from mid-March 2020 and replaced by night buses. The intervals of the night bus routes on weekdays and weekends were also changed from 30 minutes to 60 minutes by the beginning of June 2020.

At the end of March 2020, the new N65 line replaced the N66 route between Quellenplatz and Am Schöpfwerk. Since then, the N66 has been running from Alterlaa along the 66A to Quellenplatz. In the course of this change, line N64 was also renamed N8.

At the beginning of July 2020, due to a legal change, the collective call taxi lines (ASTAX) were switched to on-call bus operation. The ASTAX lines N23 and N29 were renamed to N24 and N81 and the line N90 was split into the lines N90 and N91.
