Noel Dempsey ( Irish Nollaig Ó Díomasaigh , born January 6, 1953 in Trim , County Meath ) is an Irish politician and Minister of Transport of the Republic of Ireland from 2007 to 2011.

Life

Dempsey studied at University College Dublin and St. Patrick's College in Maynooth . Politically, his career began in Meath County Council , which he was a member from 1977 to 1992. He was also a member of the Meath Library Committee from 1977 to 1991 and was a member of the Trim Urban County Council from 1981 to 1992 . Between 1986 and 1987 Dempsey was chairman of Meath County Council .

In 1987 Dempsey was elected to the Fianna Fáil in the Dáil Éireann . In the following elections he was able to successfully defend his mandate. As Teachta Dála, he held several posts as Minister of State from 1992 to 1994 . From June 1997 to June 2002 Dempsey was Environment Minister and subsequently held the position of Minister for Education and Science . In 2004 he became Minister for Communications, Coastal Protection and Natural Resources and finally moved to the Ministry of Transport in 2007.

Dempsey is married with four children, two sons and two daughters.
