description
Nolina humilis grows without a trunk, is rhizomatous and forms clumps 0.4 to 0.8 m in diameter. The variable, grass-like, green to yellow leaves that fall to the ground are 50 to 100 cm long and 3 to 6 mm wide. The leaf margins are finely serrated.
The short, slightly branched inflorescence in the leaves becomes 0.3 to 0.5 m to 1 m long. The cream-colored flowers are 1 to 2 mm long. The flowering period is in April.
When ripe, the globular, woody capsule fruits are 2 to 4 mm in diameter. The brown, spherical seeds are 2 to 4 mm in diameter.
Nolina humilis is to minus 10 ° C frost-hardy . She is hardly known.
Distribution and systematics
Nolina humilis is extremely rare. It is common in Mexico in the state of San Luis Potosí in a limited area at altitudes of 1,800 to 2,000 m. It is associated with Dasylirion species.
Nolina humilis is within the genus Nolina a member of the Section nolina . Characteristic are the grass-like, long leaves, which have similarities with the geographically isolated Nolina lindheimeriana . However, the leaves of Nolina lindheimeriana are broader and have a longer inflorescence.
The first description was in 1879 by Sereno Watson . A synonym is Nolina watsonii (Baker) Hemsl.
