from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Norbert J. Becker (born July 9, 1937 in Wiesbaden ; † May 7, 2012 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German agricultural scientist in the field of grapevine breeding and local viticulture.

Life

Becker spent his youth on a vineyard near Wiesbaden in the Rheingau . Even as a high school student he helped with the vine work and got to know the spirit of Rhenish wine happiness as a waiter in the estate's own wine tavern. After graduating from high school (1958) at the humanistic Dilthey-Gymnasium in Wiesbaden, he first became a Bundeswehr soldier and officer candidate , then completed a two-year apprenticeship in practical agriculture and studied agricultural science at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen.

After the diploma examination (1964) he was assistant at the institute for fruit growing of the university and doctoral candidate at the research institute Geisenheim . After his doctorate as Dr. agr. 1968 he became a trainee lawyer at the Hessian Ministry of Agriculture.

At the beginning of 1970 he joined the State of Baden-Württemberg at the State Viticulture Institute in Freiburg . His areas of work were grapevine breeding and viticultural location studies. Under his leadership, numerous fungus -resistant new vines were grown , and when they are grown, spraying with fungicides can largely be dispensed with. The most promising of these new breeds, including those of his predecessor Johannes Zimmermann , were further tested after being tried and tested in the institute's plantations at wineries and brought to maturity. These are the white wine varieties Johanniter , Bronner , Solaris , Helios and the red wine varieties Prior , Baron , Monarch , Cabernet Cortis and Cabernet Carbon .

Becker was involved in the training of viticulture students and master winemakers. In his free time, he led full-day Saturday excursions on viticulture as part of the "Studium generale" of the University of Freiburg . Even in retirement, he continues to devote himself to his professional hobby, namely the cultural, historical and health aspects of wine.
