The Nordwaldkammweg is a hiking trail in the Czech - Austrian border area, the course of which had to be adapted several times due to the political situation ( Iron Curtain ). The re-inclusion of historical route variants is planned.

Historic Bohemian-Austrian North Forest Ridge Trail

As early as 1888 a hiking guide through the Bohemian Forest was published, which was equipped with the route numbering concept of the German Bohemian Forest Association Budweis . The Nordwaldkammweg was then laid out in 1910 and ran partly on Austrian and partly on Czech territory in the interwar period and during the Second World War .

The intention is to use European Union funding to repair the historic hiking trails and to integrate them into the Austrian North Forest Ridge Trail, so that one can hike on both sides of the Bohemian Forest through the unspoiled areas of the Czech-Austrian border area. The marking of the paths on Czech territory has so far failed due to the lack of approval from the Czech authorities. The core zones of the Czech National Park may not be entered or driven on.

Austrian North Forest Ridge Trail

Today's Nordwaldkammweg is around 140 kilometers long and is looked after by the Austrian Alpine Association (local sections) . The hiking trail runs partly along the European watershed and is largely identical to the section of the European long-distance hiking trail E6 that runs from the Dreisesselberg ( 1322  m above sea level ) to the Mandlstein ( 874  m above sea level ) . The numerous asphalt stretches are rightly criticized, but discussions with the landowners about relocating the road were only partially positive.
