Nunnally Hunter Johnson (born December 5, 1897 in Columbus , Georgia , † March 25, 1977 in Hollywood , California ) was an American reporter, screenwriter and film producer who has occasionally also directed .

Life

Nunnally Johnson was in the 1920s, a reporter for the New York Post , before him to Hollywood moved. He later belonged there with scripts for Jesse James, Man Without a Law (1939), The Fruits of Wrath (1940) or How Do You Get A Millionaire? (1953) one of the most successful screenwriters. He worked there with well-known directors such as John Ford , Fritz Lang , Robert Siodmak , Howard Hawks and George Cukor . Johnson was also a producer on most of the films he wrote the script for . He also directed eight films , such as Eva with the three faces (1957).

In 1941 he was nominated for an Oscar for the first time for his screenplay for The Fruits of Wrath . he received a second Oscar nomination in 1944 , this time for Holy Matrimony . In 1960 Johnson was honored with a star on the Walk of Fame . The previous year, the Writers Guild of America had given him the Laurel Award for Screen Writing Achievement .

Johnson was married three times, most recently from 1939 until his death in 1977 to actress Dorris Bowdon , with whom he had three children. His daughter Marjorie Fowler was a film editor and his grandson Jack Johnson is an actor.
