ONE is an American, non-partisan, international lobbying and campaigning organization that works to fight extreme poverty and preventable diseases. The focus of the work is sub-Saharan Africa.

In contrast to the vast majority of development-policy non-governmental organizations , ONE concentrates exclusively on political work. The organization itself does not run any emergency aid or development cooperation projects, but is particularly committed to the G8 countries to reduce the structural obstacles to development in poorer countries.

The organization is headquartered in Washington, DC , with European headquarters in London . Further offices are located in Berlin , Brussels , Paris , Abuja and Johannesburg . The Germany office is located in Berlin-Mitte and is managed by Stephan Exo-Kreischer.

history

The origins of the organization begin in 2002 with the founding of the organization DATA , a development lobby organization with which ONE merged in 2008.

Following their activities as part of the global debt relief initiative Jubilee 2000 - Drop the Debt , Bono , Bob Geldof , Bobby Shriver , Jamie Drummond and Lucy Matthew founded the lobby organization DATA (Debt, Aids, Trade, Africa) in spring 2002. DATA should increase the pressure on the governments of the industrialized countries to do their part in the fight against extreme poverty in Africa. There was a focus on debt relief , the fight against HIV / AIDS and the reform of unfair trade regulations. DATA translated his abbreviation as “democracy, accountability, transparency” - that is, democracy, accountability and transparency. Because the citizens of the countries affected by poverty should also be supported in asserting their right to the effective and transparent use of any kind of funding. As a result, DATA initially set up offices in Washington, DC and London in order to campaign for the goals of the organization vis-à-vis political decision-makers in the G8 countries. In Germany, DATA opened an office in Berlin at the beginning of 2007.

In 2004, DATA and ten other leading development organizations came to the USA (Bread for the World Institute, CARE USA, International Medical Corps, International Rescue Committee , Mercy Corps, Oxfam America, Plan USA, Save the Children , World Concern and World Vision United States ) together to found a new, non-partisan campaign organization. Above all, this should mobilize the public to fight extreme poverty and preventable diseases. The initial aim was to give new impetus to efforts to combat poverty in Africa in the run-up to the G8 summit in Gleneagles in 2005. Due to the close cooperation with Bono and Bob Geldof , DATA was involved in organizing the Live 8 concerts. These activities, along with the Global Action Against Poverty , will play an important role in building political pressure for the G8 summit in Gleneagles , Scotland . In Gleneagles, the G7 countries committed themselves for the first time to a specific amount of aid within a specific time frame in order to achieve the United Nations Millennium Development Goals . The organization then began to publish the annual study "The DATA Report", in which the implementation of the G7's aid pledges to the countries of Africa was continuously checked and recalculated.

In 2007 DATA and ONE decided to bring their complementary strengths (lobbying and campaigns) to a joint, internationally operating organization under the name ONE. The merger was formally completed in 2008 and DATA changed its name in Germany to ONE in September of the same year.

Germany

The Germany office was founded in 2007 as a regional location for DATA . The occasion for this was the German G8 presidency that year. The establishment of the office received prominent support from Bob Geldof. In this context he took over the editor-in-chief of the Bildzeitung for one day , interviewing Chancellor Angela Merkel , among others . Geldof also organized the “Intellectual Live 8 for Africa” forum. Both were done to make DATA's goals known in Germany. The publication of the DATA report this year was moderated by Tobias Kahler and personalities such as Herbert Grönemeyer , Bob Geldof, Bono and Jamie Drummond were present to increase the media attention. N-tv broadcast the publication live.

Chancellor Angela Merkel welcomes ONE youth ambassador, ONE co-founder Bono and the former Africa director of ONE, Sipho Moyo

In 2008, DATA in Germany concentrated primarily on ensuring that the commitments made at the G8 summit last year are kept. The “Don't stop. Carry on! ”Included, among other things, an open letter to the Chancellor, which included international personalities and well-known German names such as Udo Lindenberg , Frank Bsirske , Campino , Sabine Christiansen , Günter Grass , Eva Padberg , Anne-Sophie Mutter , Marius Müller-Westernhagen and Roger Willemsen was signed.

In 2009 DATA was renamed ONE. The “Be ONE of us” campaign gathered signatories for “Article ONE”. The aim of the campaign was to remind the government to keep its promises made to the world's poorest. The German commitment, especially for health, agriculture, transparency and energy, must be strengthened. Campino, Bob Geldof and Cherno Jobatey started the campaign and celebrities like Bono, Michael Mittermeier , Jan Josef Liefers , Anna Loos , Minh-Khai Phan-Thi , Benno Fürmann and Katja Riemann supported it.

The organization's youth ambassador program, which was introduced in six countries in 2016, was launched by the Berlin team in 2011. Under the motto “Living Proof”, 20 youth ambassadors made the successes of development cooperation known to the public. A highlight of the program was a meeting with the then Federal President and patron of the youth ambassador program Christian Wulff , at which the young people acted as advocates of development cooperation. ONE also worked to ensure that the then Development Minister Dirk Niebel did not cut German contributions to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS , Malaria and Tuberculosis .

In 2012 ONE started the “ONE Call” campaign, which was considered particularly innovative. She was shortlisted for the German Prize for Online Communication. The aim was to avert an impending cut in German development aid and instead to enforce an increase. ONE was supported by well-known personalities such as Benno Fürmann, Bob Geldof, Culcha Candela , Cherno Jobatey and Katja Riemann. The stars lent their voice to ONE to deliver phone messages. Interested parties could call the celebrities and explain why they should support the campaign with their signature.

In 2013, in the year of the federal election, ONE started the award-winning campaign “I'm looking!”. The aim was to include strong development policy guidelines in the coalition agreement, for which the organization u. a. addressed the coalition with an open letter signed by a number of prominent Germans. A meeting of the 50 ONE youth ambassadors with Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel and ONE co-founder Bono as well as ONE's then Africa Director Dr. Sipho Moyo, various PR campaigns and the support of many celebrities such as Herbert Grönemeyer, Anna Loos, Rea Garvey , Tim Mälzer , Minh-Khai-Phan-Thi and others have made the campaign known and successful.

In 2014, the organization launched the “ONE Vote” campaign, an appeal to the European Union to focus on development cooperation after the European elections and to do more to combat extreme poverty. In connection with this, the “ONE Summit” took place in Brussels, in which the German youth ambassadors also took part. In addition, ONE mobilized with an international campaign for faster and better measures in the fight against Ebola . ONE's “Ebola Response Tracker” helped track aid pledges.

At the replenishment conference for the Gavi vaccine alliance in 2015, ONE in Germany was supported in particular by Maria Furtwängler and Bill Gates in demanding that the German payments for the alliance be increased. As part of the G7 campaign “Mut2015”, ONE had seven hot air balloons with the faces of the G7 heads of state and government rise up to 10 meters at various G7 events in Dresden , Munich and Garmisch-Partenkirchen . ONE demanded “more than hot air” from the summit meeting. The report “Poverty is Sexist”, which shows that women in particular suffer from extreme poverty, was published by ONE for the first time in 2015. The German campaign was called # MUT2015 and called for the G7 countries to be more committed to empowering women in developing countries . In 2016 there was a new edition of the report “Poverty is Sexist”. The publication on International Women's Day was accompanied by an open letter in which ONE underlined the demand for global gender equality and signed by international celebrities such as Melinda Gates and Elton John as well as German supporters such as Anna Loos and Carolin Kebekus .

Working method

ONE's activities can be divided into political work, public relations and scientific activities. As an advocacy or lobbying organization for the dismantling of structural obstacles to development, the organization maintains direct contact with political decision-makers in important G7 countries. ONE promotes the development of proven effective methods to combat extreme poverty and preventable diseases in the world's poorest countries. A team of development policy experts carries out this work, as does an advisory board of renowned scientists and African personalities. ONE also relies on close cooperation with long-time Africa activists Bono and Bob Geldof as well as a strong network of personalities interested in development policy, which enables exchange with very high-ranking political decision-makers.

In the area of public relations, the organization uses a wide range of campaign activities and gives supporters the opportunity to participate, e. B. by participating in online petitions, coordinated telephone campaigns or other activities that are intended to exert pressure on political decision-makers. According to its own information, the organization has two million volunteer supporters around the world who are involved in this way. In the USA, ONE also employs full-time employees in many parts of the country who coordinate regional grassroots activities by volunteer supporters for political work with local congressmen.

To support political work, the organization's development policy experts prepare or commission scientific studies. The organization's most important study since 2006 has been the annual DATA report .

ONE does not publicly call for donations.

Political demands

The aim is to remind heads of state and government of promises made in the area of poverty reduction, which is why ONE calls for strong political support for the Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations and continuously advocates the donor countries to finance development policy in accordance with the amount promised in Gleneagles. The organization continues to advocate efficiency gains in existing development policy and therefore calls for the implementation of the Paris Declaration and supports corresponding reform projects on the part of the donor countries. The thematic priorities are health, education and a reform of world trade in order to reduce the structural disadvantages of developing countries. Due to the history of the organization, debt relief is traditionally another focus.

ONE also emphasizes efforts to increase the rule of law, accountability and transparency in developing countries to ensure that strategies to eradicate poverty are implemented in a sustainable manner.

Known supporters

In addition to the well-known Africa activists Bono ( U2 ) and Bob Geldof , a large number of internationally known personalities support the work of ONE. The Nobel Peace Prize laureate and former South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu acts as an international patron. In Germany, Katja Riemann , Jan Josef Liefers , Benno Fürmann , Jana Pallaske , Michael Mittermeier , Minh-Khai Phan-Thi , Rea Garvey and Cherno Jobatey support ONE. However, the organization emphasizes that it is not a celebrity campaign, but rather relies heavily on the commitment of the volunteer supporters.

criticism

Co-founder Bono ( U2 ) has already come under frequent criticism because he pays part of his income in the Netherlands instead of Ireland, where he only has to pay a fraction of Irish taxes, but at the same time the industrialized countries under ONE to increase their development aid prompts.
