history

Remains have been found from both the Stone Age and the Roman Age. Frankish graves from the 7th century were also discovered. Already in 960 goods from "Embe" belonged to the St. Pantaleon Abbey in Cologne. She owned a large property in this area. Oberembt was first mentioned in 1225. Since the Middle Ages Oberembt has belonged to the Kaster office in the Duchy of Jülich . In 1794 French troops occupied the place and Oberembt now became part of the Mairie Esch in the canton of Bergheim, in the Arrondissement de Cologne in the Département de la Roer . In 1815 Oberembt came to the Kingdom of Prussia and in 1816 to the mayor's office of Esch in the Bergheim (Erft) district in the Cologne administrative district. Since January 1st, 1975 Oberembt has been part of Elsdorf. Oberembt has been part of the monument area since 1997.

Bürgewald

Oberembt is one of the so-called Bürgewald communities that owned the rights to the Bürgewald . According to the legend, this is due to the holy Arnold von Arnoldsweiler , through the legendary "Ride around the Bürgewald". The main town of the Bürgewald communities is Arnoldsweiler . There the people from Oberembter had to offer a candle to St. Arnold on Whit Tuesday, later on Whit Monday. This wax interest was only canceled in the 19th century.

Attractions

Laubenhaus Zur Löv
  • Catholic parish church of St. Simon and Judas Thaddäus: a Catholic church already existed around 1246. It was a branch of the Catholic parish church in Niederembt until 1582. The ceiling is supported by a ribbed vault and a star vault in the choir. Remains of tendril paintings from 1542. Four vaulted consoles, executed as two human half-figures and two grimacing heads.
  • The Laubenhaus Zur Löv from 1644 is the only remaining arbor house in the Rhein-Erftkreis.
