Obzor [ obzɔr ] ( Bulgarian Обзор ) is a town in southeastern Bulgaria , the Black Sea , in the oblast Burgas , in the town of Nessebar , near the town of Byala .

Surname

The Bulgarian word "Obzor" means: panoramic view or overview, as the city is located on the easternmost slopes of the Balkan Mountains, which slope gently down to the coast, and from the mountains on the outskirts you have a wide panoramic view of the entire area and the sea.

history

The Thracians who gave the place the name Navlahos settled here more than 3000 years ago . Around 1000 BC The Greeks founded the city of Heliopolis (German: city of the sun; → Greek colonization ) on the same site .

Later the Romans gave Obzor the name Templum Iovis ( Jupiter's Temple) after the Jupiter Temple they built in the city. The Black Sea coastal road, known under the Romans as Via Pontica , ran through Templum Iovis .

In the Middle Ages, the Bulgarian fortress Kozjak was located above Obzor .

After the conquest of Bulgaria by the Turks, the place initially received the Turkish name Gjoslu (the beautiful) and since the 16th century Gjoseken, which has the same meaning in Turkish as the Bulgarian word Obzor. It was not until 1936 that the place was officially renamed Obzor, when the Turkish name of the place was translated into Bulgarian.

For centuries Obzor was just a small fishing village. In the 20s of the 20th century, tourism started here - in one of the first places on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. Visible in the beautifully designed holiday villas from the 1920s and 1930s in Uliza Tschernomorska (German: Black Sea Road), which runs directly behind the beach on the seashore. Most of these historic holiday homes with a direct view of the sea urgently need renovation.

The city is since 2010 named for the Obzor Hill , a hill in Graham Land in Antarctica.
