occupation

Oh Boy is a German feature film by the director Jan-Ole Gerster from 2012. The black and white filmed and jazz music- backed tragic comedy is about an aimless ex-student from Berlin (played by Tom Schilling ) who spent a day and a night drifting through the German capital and meeting a wide variety of people. The film has won several awards and in 2013 received the German Film Prize in six categories, including best feature film.

action

Niko, who was in his late twenties from Berlin, dropped out of law two years ago and has lived through the day ever since. The film, which takes place on only one day (from the morning of the first day to the next morning), largely dispenses with a narrative action and shows in episodic scenes how Niko drifts aimlessly through the city in front of the backdrop of Berlin, sometimes with comical, sometimes tragic situations are confronted.

He meets some very different people: his father, who turns off the money for him; the failed actor and life artist Matze; his lonely and desperate neighbor Karl Speckenbach; a harassed psychologist who will not renew his revoked driver's license; his former classmate Julika, who after many years is still fighting against the emotional injuries of her childhood; drunken youngsters who bleed his nose and, late at night, a mysterious old man who talks about his childhood during the Nazi era and dies in the hospital during the night.

At the beginning of the film, the protagonist is offered a coffee when he gets up, which he turns down. As a running gag , he tries in vain for the rest of the film (seven times in total) to have a cup of coffee, which he finally succeeds in doing.

background

Oh Boy is Gerster's thesis at the German Film and Television Academy Berlin . The film was shot in Berlin from June 7th to July 10th 2010 and had a budget of around 300,000 euros. The film was released in German cinemas on November 1, 2012 at X Verleih, where it was seen by over 350,000 people.

criticism

"'Oh Boy' tenderly describes the chaos of an urban and a corresponding inner life and proves that it can only find an order that makes sense through assembled film images."

- Ralf Krämer : The world

"Jan Ole Gerster has a talent for inventing situations in which he can turn his feeling for what makes Berlin so special."

- Wilfried Hippen : the daily newspaper

“Everything is right: from the Swabian latte macchiato saleswoman to the embittered off-theater director to the excellent Schilling. Full of hilarious dialogues and poetic snapshots of urban reality. "

- Wiebke Toebelmann : HÖRZU

“Tom Schilling is one of the main actors, the other is the big city. The film is a partly comical, partly oppressive portrait of a Berlin society in which an unbelievably gruff tone prevails, a general lack of distance and disrespect that can turn to extremes at any time, sometimes even violence. "

- Christian Mayer : Süddeutsche Zeitung

“Like Niko, the film also strolls through Berlin, whereby the various episodes are very well balanced between mood and satire, tragedy and comedy, everyday life and exaggeration. Just by the fact that Jan Ole Gerster moves the capital away from the chic showcase and hotspot backdrops, his film is also advancing to a true Berlin film. "

- Christian Horn : fluter

“Melancholy comedy with an episode-like structure, sometimes entertaining with perfectly timed skits, sometimes with punchy dialog jokes. Played confidently in the main role, the film, photographed in black and white and underlaid with effective "cool" jazz music, gains a dreamlike and strictly stylized quality. "
