Ole Gunnar Solskjær [ sulʃɐ ] (born February 26, 1973 in Kristiansund ) is a former Norwegian soccer player and today's soccer coach . The 67-time Norwegian international played for Manchester United from 1996 to 2007 , during which time he won six English championships in 1999, the UEFA Champions League and the World Cup. In the early 2010s he won three national titles as a coach with Molde FK . He has been the head coach of Manchester United since December 2018.

Career as a player

In Norway

Solskjær's football career began at the age of 17 with the Norwegian club Clausenengen FK . In 1994 the striker moved to Molde FK in the top Norwegian league. In 42 games he scored 31 goals for Molde before Alex Ferguson brought him to Manchester United in 1996.

At Manchester United

In his first season at United, Solskjær scored 18 goals and won the English league title with the club. Since the Champions League final in 1999 against Bayern Munich , the Norwegian is a legend among fans of the club, as he then was one of the two scorers, who secured the second CL title for Manchester United in stoppage time within three minutes . Solskjær scored the 2-1 here.

Due to several injury breaks and the strong competition in the United attack, the trained striker was often used as an attacking midfielder . Solskjær made his first appearance in midfield as an injury-related replacement for David Beckham .

Because of a knee operation in August 2004, Solskjær was not used for the entire 2004/05 season. He made his comeback on December 5, 2005 in the reserves of Manchester United against Liverpool.

At the end of August 2007, the 67-time national player ended his career. He thus drew the consequences of the persistent knee problems that he had had since 2004. Manchester United announced that Solskjær will find a new job on the club's coaching staff.

National team

Solskjær played 67 games for the Norwegian national team , including the 1998 World Cup and the 2000 European Championship . For Norway he scored a total of 23 goals.

Career as a coach

From 2011 to 2014 he was the coach of the Norwegian first division team Molde FK . During this time he was able to win the Norwegian championship twice .

On January 2, 2014 it was announced that Solskjær would be the new coach at Cardiff City , the Welsh capital club, which was in acute danger of relegation at the time . There he could not turn things around and at the end of the season he was relegated with Cardiff from the Premier League . In the following second division season , he resigned after the 7th match day due to a capital false start and the accompanying discussions about himself.

After a year off, Ole Gunnar Solskjær returned to Molde FK in October 2015 , where he signed a contract until 2018.

On December 19, 2018, Solskjær took over the Manchester United Premier League team, which was sixth in the table with 26 points after 17 matchdays, as an initially interim replacement for the previously dismissed José Mourinho until the end of the 2018/19 season . Originally, he should return to Molde FK after the end of the season, which would have missed the first league weeks of the Eliteserien 2019 , which started at the end of March . Under Solskjaer Manchester United won through March 14 of his 19 competitive matches, standing in the league reach the Champions League places in fifth place and reached the Champions League quarter-finals after Paris Saint-Germain defeated in the second round. On March 28, 2019, Solskjær received a new contract with a term until June 30, 2022, with which he no longer returned to Molde.
