Olene S. Walker
Olene Smith Walker (born November 15, 1930 in Ogden , Utah , † November 28, 2015 in Salt Lake City , Utah) was an American politician ( Republican Party ), who was lieutenant governor from 1993 to 2003 and governor of the State of Utah was.
Private life
Walker received her bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University , her master's degree from Stanford University, and her Ph.D. at the University of Utah . She was married to Myron Walker. The couple had seven children and 25 grandchildren.
Political career
She was the first woman to hold the office of lieutenant governor of Utah. In this role she introduced many important initiatives. These included training programs, budgeting for safety measures, health reform and training programs for employees. She also established the Healthcare Reform Task Force , which resulted in the creation of the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), which ensured affordable health care for Utah's children. She chaired the Workforce Task Force , which resulted in the creation of the Department of Workforce Services . She also chaired the National Conference of Lieutenant Governors and was President of the National Association of Secretaries of State . She was the first lieutenant governor to hold this office. She also belonged to the Utah House of Representatives as a Whip of the Republican majority faction.
On November 5, 2003, she was sworn in as the first woman to serve as governor of Utah. In her tenure, which ended January 3, 2005, she introduced programs to improve literacy and education.
