Olympic demonstration sports

Olympic demonstration sports were competitions and demonstrations within the framework of the Olympic Games that were not official Olympic competitions. Mostly it was sports that were to be tested and then later also became Olympic disciplines ( baseball , taekwondo , tennis , curling , badminton ) or sports whose regional interest meant that a large audience was expected ( pelota in Mexico City and Barcelona ). Sometimes sports were only included in the program as a demonstration competition because there was no uniform international association ( freestyle skiing ).

The IOC , at its session in 1989 in Puerto Rico determined that after 1992 no demonstration sports are played.

The first winter games represent a special case: When the International Winter Sports Week was held in Chamonix in 1924 , neither the IOC nor the organizers of the event had specified a division into official sports or demonstration sports . Only when these competitions were retrospectively declared to be the Olympic Games in 1926 did this problem arise. The subsequent distinction was often controversial, so the curling competition was only declared an official Olympic competition in 2006. Military patrol competition is generally considered a demonstration sport.
