final

August 10, 2012, 9:20 pm

The US team, actually considered the favorite, was weakened by injuries. So other teams started with good prospects. These included Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Vice World Champions South Africa and Belgium.

The following line-up changes were made for the finale:

  • USA - Angelo Taylor ran for Manteo Mitchell.
  • Belgium - Michaël Bultheel replaced Nils Duerinck.
  • Venezuela - Omar Longart ran in place of José Melendez.
  • South Africa - Louis Jacobus van Zyl replaced Ofentse Mogawane.
  • Cuba - Noel Ruíz ran for Orestes Rodríguez.

Bahamas starter Chris Brown put his relay team in the lead. Behind were Trinidad and Tobago and the USA. Demetrius Pinder was able to extend Bahama's lead, but in the third round Tony McQuay brought the US relay to the top. In the final round, Ramon Miller caught up with US runner Angelo Taylor for the Bahamas. On the home stretch, he passed Taylor and brought the Bahamas relay victory over the US team. The runners from Trinidad and Tobago finished third ahead of the team from Great Britain, which also remained below the 3-minute mark.

For Trinidad and Tobago it was the first medal win in this discipline.
