Especially the show jumping caused a stir, where six athletes were eliminated because of multiple refusals. This also included the Olympic champions Lena Schöneborn and Laura Asadauskaitė-Zadneprovskienė . The Cuban Leydi Laura Moya had to receive medical treatment after a serious fall, but was able to take part in the combined event again. In international competitions there are seldom more than two eliminations per show jumping event.

The originally fourth-placed Chen Qian was subsequently disqualified for doping in June 2017.

qualification

Qualification criteria

72 athletes will take part in the competitions, 36 women and 36 men each. The host NOK was guaranteed two quota places . The world association UIPM was able to award up to four quota places by invitation after the qualification phase. Each NOK was allowed to start a total of four athletes, two women and two men.

The following qualification criteria applied in parallel to women and men. The winner of the 2015 World Cup final in Minsk won a quota place. At the 2015 World Championships in Berlin , the top three athletes won a quota place. Further places were then awarded at the continental championships. One quota place was awarded at the African Championships in Cairo , five at the Pan American Games in Toronto , six at the Asia / Oceania Championships in Beijing (five for Asia, one for Oceania) and eight at the European Championships in Bath . Three more quota places were awarded at the 2016 World Championships in Moscow . The last seven places were distributed over the world rankings on June 1, 2015. If an athlete had already won a quota place and again achieved a placement that guaranteed a quota place, the next athlete without a quota place received it.
