The Olympic cycling stadium was a temporary cycling track in Berlin .

history

On the occasion of the 1936 Summer Olympics , a cycling stadium was built on the sports field of the Berlin Sports Club . The stadium was located at the northern end of the AVUS , near the radio tower . Construction began on June 15, 1936; the lead architect was Clemens Schürmann , an expert in the construction of cycle tracks. The racetrack was 400 meters long, 6.30 meters wide and was made of wood. The curves were increased by 3 meters. The total area of the track was 2980 square meters.

In addition to the already existing covered grandstand of the sports field, which offered 1500 spectators, another auditorium was built for 12,000 spectators.

The opening for training took place on July 1, 1936; there was a 375 square meter wooden surface in the interior of the stadium. Here were art and unicycling demonstrated. There were also loudspeaker systems, a display panel and a microphone for the radio in the interior. The number of spectators exceeded expectations: initially only two security guards were present, who were completely overwhelmed, so that green areas and hedges were damaged. Thereupon 22 cashiers were on duty to demand entrance fees for the payment of additional security guards. The price was RM 0.20 for adults and RM 0.10 for children. The main grandstand in the west of the area was divided into sectors and the first three rows of blocks E and F were reserved for guests of honor. The press representatives gathered behind it.

During the 1936 Summer Olympics, a total of four competitions took place on the track; three new Olympic records were set. Shortly after the games, the stadium was demolished to expand the exhibition center .
