Operation Vittles is the name of the Berlin Airlift . After Germany's defeat in the Second World War was sealed, the three victorious powers Great Britain , the United States , the Soviet Union and France took over sovereignty over the German Reich and divided or spun off its territory among themselves into zones of occupation . Berlin , Germany's capital, was in the Soviet sector and was also divided into four zones of occupation. On June 24, 1948, the Soviet Union closed the roads to Berlin and the Berlin blockade occurred . As a result of this blockade, the Western Allies were no longer able to adequately supply West Berlin , which was an enclave in the Soviet Occupation Zone (SBZ). The blockade was a means of pressure on the Soviet side with the aim of finally integrating Germany into its own economic and political system via West Berlin.

The Vittles operation under the command of General Curtis LeMay was used to supply the city of Berlin with necessary food and goods. The city ran out of fuel, ran out of medicines, and queued to buy milk. Every nook and cranny was missing, as the supply routes were no longer available. Electricity was also severely restricted. The Western Allies used airplanes for supplies because the land and waterways were closed. On September 30, 1949, the airlift was officially ended.

The film was produced by the 4201st Motion Picture Squadron United States Air Force.
