Oppland was a province ( Fylke ) in Norway , which bordered the Fylken Trøndelag , Møre og Romsdal , Sogn og Fjordane , Buskerud , Akershus , Oslo and Hedmark . On January 1, 2019, 189,545 people lived here (3.70% of the total population of Norway). The area of the Fylke was 25,192 km² (land area 23,785 km²). The administrative headquarters were in Lillehammer .
Before the reform of 1919, the province was called Kristians amt (after the Danish-Norwegian king Christian VII ) and was divided into the bailiwicks of Hadeland, Nordre Gudbrandsdalen, Søndre Gudbrandsdalen, Toten and Valdres .
On January 1, 2020, Oppland merged with Hedmark to form the new Fylke Innlandet . Only the municipalities of Jevnaker and Lunner switched to Fylke Viken . The basis for the merger was a resolution of the Storting on June 8, 2017, which provided for a reduction to eleven areas as part of a regional reform .
Oppland extended over the great lakes Mjøsa , Randsfjord and Sperillen into the mountains Jotunheimen and Rondane .
A particular economic factor in the area was tourism in the scenic mountain regions, the Gudbrandsdal , the Valdrestal and the localities. Numerous museums documented the area's cultural identity.
The Begna flows through the Valdres and the Gudbrandsdalslågen through the Gudbrandsdal . Here the Scottish army attacked mainland Norway in 1612. In Oppland were the cities of Lillehammer and Gjøvik and Norway's two highest mountains, Glittertind and Galdhøpiggen .
