Ordoño II. († 924 ) was King of León (914–924) and (as Ordoño I ) of Galicia (910–924).

family

Ordoño was the son of Alfonso III. from Asturias, who sent him to be educated by the Banu Qasi in Saragossa. When his father died (910) he received the crown of Galicia. The death of his brother Garciá I in Zamora (914) meant that the crown of León passed to him. So he brought the territories of the Asturian- Leonese kingdom under his rule and resided in León . With him the Kingdom of Asturias ended and the Kingdom of León began to exist.

politics

He continued the policy of territorial expansion of his predecessors in two directions. In the west he reached the cities of Évora and Mérida , which he had both plundered. The Moorish governor was forced to buy the withdrawal of the Leonese. In the east he joined Sancho I of Navarre in his fight against Emir Abd ar-Rahman III. from Cordoba on. The Moors were defeated in the Battle of San Esteban de Gormaz in 917 , which resulted in the cities of Arnedo and Calahorra being wrested from the Banu Qasi the following year . Abd al-Rahman's reaction was not long in coming, because in 920 he put an army on the march and retook Osma and San Esteban de Gormaz, invaded Navarre and defeated the Christians at the Battle of Valdejunquera . He managed to capture the bishops of Tui and Salamanca .

Ordoño II attributed the defeat to the absence of the Counts of Castile , whom he had called up, but for whose appearance he waited in vain. Thereupon he called her to Tejares and had her killed. A counter-attack by Christian troops led to the occupation of La Rioja and the annexation of the areas around Nájera and Viguera in Navarre.

progeny

Ordoño married three times:

  • Elvira Menendez (892), the daughter of Hermenegildo Gutiérrez; From this marriage there were three sons: Sancho Ordoñez , Alfons IV and Ramiro II . All three would later become kings.
  • Aragonta Gutiérrez (922), daughter of Gutierre Osorio and Elvira Gatónez (great-granddaughter of King Ramiro I of Asturias ); no descendants arose from the connection with Aragonta.
  • Sancha (923), daughter of Sancho Garcès , King of Navarre.

On his death, the crown fell to his brother Fruela II , which would later lead to a dispute over the succession.
