Oskar Masing

Oskar Hugo Georg Masing (born March 12 . Jul / 24. March  1874 greg. In Kuressaare on the island of Saaremaa ; † 1. January 1947 in Tannroda ) was a Baltic German philologist.

Life

The island, which now belongs to Estonia, was part of the then Baltic Sea province of Livonia of the Russian Empire . As the son of a retired Imperial Russian officer, Masing lived the first years of his life in Kertel on the island of Dagö , but then in the university town of Dorpat . Because his parents were poor, Masing was able to take his Abitur with a scholarship and study medicine at the University of Dorpat from 1893 (without a degree). He was a member of the Fraternitas Rigensis . After working for a long time as a private tutor in Kurland, he studied philology in Leipzig from 1903 to 1906 and received his doctorate. phil. He then worked as a senior teacher at various schools in Riga, then also as a lecturer at the Herder Institute in Riga for the German-Baltic minority .

family

Oskar Masing's son was the historian Gerhard Masing (born 1909 in Riga , died in Courland in 1944 ), who was assigned to the Volksdeutsche Mittelstelle in Posen from late 1939 to 1940 to record the documents that the Baltic Germans were resettled as a result of the Had brought the Hitler-Stalin Pact with them. Oskar Masing was an uncle of the physicist Walter Masing .

The German Baltic Dictionary

After the First World War , the Society for History and Archeology in Riga and the Learned Estonian Society in Tartu started the project of a comprehensive Baltic German dictionary. Under Masing's direction, the dictionary was completed by 1939, but could no longer be printed. All research material was lost due to the war. The second attempt at the project in the 1950s by Walther Mitzka and Alfred Schönfeldt was not completed either. The materials have been in the archive of the Herder Institute in Marburg since 2005 .
