Ottavio Bianchi (born October 6, 1943 in Brescia ) is a former Italian football player and coach .

Player career

In the club

Bianchi played in his youth for his hometown club, Brescia Calcio . In the 1960/61 season he made his debut at the age of 17 in the professional team, which was then playing in Serie B and was threatened with relegation. But in the next few years he only reached single-digit positions with the team and even rose to Serie A with her in the 1964/65 season . After the club was promoted, he stayed there for a season before moving to SSC Napoli . There he was fourth in Serie A in his first season and played his first international games with the team, as the club first took part in the Messestädte Cup in the 1966/67 season . In the following season he was even runner-up behind AC Milan with Napoli . Since Napoli had financial difficulties, important top performers had to be given up and the team was weakened. Therefore, he only reached the middle of the table with Naples in the league. In the 1969/70 season, the team made international attention, as they reached the final of the English-Italian Cup competition and were defeated there against Swindon Town 0-3. In its final season, the team played for the championship again and ended up third. From Naples he moved to the new league Atalanta Bergamo . There he stayed for two seasons and then left the club after relegated to the second division. He then moved to AC Milan and played a good first half with the team. But in the second half of the season the team disappointed and ended up only seventh in the league, but was able to reach the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup . Milan lost the final 2-0 to 1. FC Magdeburg . Bianchi left Milan after a season as he fell short of expectations. This was followed by a short interlude with Cagliari Calcio in Serie A. He only spent a year in Sardinia and then let his active career at SPAL Ferrara end.

In national team

During his time at SSC Napoli Bianchi was nominated for the first time for the national team together with Antonio Juliano in 1966. In his first game against the Soviet Union , he played from the start and was substituted in the 76th minute for Spartaco Landini . He played his second and last international match in front of a home crowd at the Stadio San Paolo and won against Romania 3-1. After these two friendlies, he was no longer considered by national coach Ferruccio Valcareggi .

Coaching career

Bianchi began his coaching career in the 1976/77 season when he was appointed player- coach at SPAL Ferrara . After Bianchi was relegated with the club at the end of the season, he left the club and also ended his active career. He received his first position as a coach at AC Siena in Serie C2 . With the club he stayed one season and was twelfth in the end. He then went to Serie C for AC Mantova , where he also only stayed one season before moving to league rivals US Triestina . There he was fourth in the table and thus achieved his best result as a coach. Nevertheless, he left this club after only one season and moved to Atalanta Bergamo , who also played in Serie C. Bianchi led the club straight into Serie B in its first season and was thus able to celebrate its first success. In Serie B, the team landed in eighth place and Bianchi was replaced by Nedo Sonetti after the season . Bianchi had not found a new club for the new season before signing with the US Avellino after Fernando Veneranda was fired . Bianchi saved the club from relegation to Serie B, but was replaced by Antonio Angelillo at the end of the season . But by saving Avellino he had attracted attention and was therefore signed by Como Calcio , which he led to eleventh place in Serie A. At the beginning of the new season he was signed by SSC Napoli , where he was already active as a player. In its first season, he led the team to third place. In the following season he won the double with the team around superstar Diego Maradona and thus also brought the first championship in the club's history to Naples. By winning the championship, the Neapolitans had qualified for the European Cup. But the team failed in the first round at Real Madrid's star ensemble . The team had finished second in the league and therefore took part in the UEFA Cup next season. The team reached the final of the UEFA Cup after beating Juventus Turin and FC Bayern Munich . Naples won it after a round trip against VfB Stuttgart with a score of 5: 4. After the great international successes, Bianchi resigned his position at SSC Napoli and went to AS Roma after a season break , where Andrea Carnevale , whom he had already trained in Napoli, followed. There he won the Coppa Italia in his first season and reached the UEFA Cup final , which was lost to Inter Milan . But the next one didn't go so well and Bianchi left the club. During the next season he then replaced Claudio Ranieri in Naples who was in danger of relegation with the team. At the end of the season he reached eleventh place with the team and thus held the class. His next engagement followed a year later when he took over the coaching position at Inter Milan. After a mixed first season, he was replaced relatively quickly in the second, due to failures, by Luis Suárez . He then ended his coaching career and became sports director at Fiorentina in 2002 . Since the club was in danger of relegation this season, Bianchi had to go back to the coaching bench and thus took over the post from Roberto Mancini . But even he could not prevent the descent and then resigned from his offices in Florence.
