Otto Stammer

Otto Stammer (born October 3, 1900 in Leipzig , † September 12, 1978 in Berlin ) was a German sociologist.

Life

After studying public law, economics, history, sociology, philosophy, pedagogy and newspaper studies 1920–1924 in Leipzig and Berlin (among others with Karl Bücher , Hans Driesch , Hermann Heller , Theodor Litt and Eduard Spranger ) Otto Stammer received his doctorate in Leipzig in 1924 with a dissertation The State with Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels to the Dr. rer. pole. Already during his studies Stammer was involved in the socialist student body . a. as its chairman from 1922 to 1925.

Stammer initially took over a lectureship at the Heimvolkshochschule in Harrisleefeld in 1929 . Until 1931 he continued to work in adult education and journalism, until in 1932 he took over the education secretariat of the SPD district of Central Silesia. In 1933 he was temporarily imprisoned for political reasons and then continued his education as an unemployed man until 1937. From 1937 to 1948 he was a manager in various positions in the pharmaceutical industry and from 1948 to 1949 editor and lecturer in Leipzig. In 1949 he qualified as a professor in sociology at the Free University of Berlin . There he became associate professor in 1951 and full professor in 1954 for sociology and political science and co-founder of the Institute for Sociology. As the leading German representative of political sociology at the time , he retired in 1965 .

From 1959 to 1963 Otto Stammer was chairman of the German Society for Sociology . Together with Fritz Bauer , Willi Eichler and Erich Potthoff , he edited the magazine Die Neue Gesellschaft .
