Otto Wittmann (born March 23, 1907 in Heidelberg , † February 18, 1986 in Schopfheim ) was a German geologist and high school teacher . He was the author of numerous scientific works and books on geology, geography and regional studies.

Life

Otto Wittmann was born the son of the Chief Postal Inspector Wilhelm Wittmann and his wife Karoline. He passed his Abitur in 1926 at the Realgymnasium in Ettenheim and began studying natural sciences at the University of Bonn as well as in Freiburg and Heidelberg . He completed his doctorate in geology summa cum laude in 1932 at Heidelberg University. For a possible appointment to the higher teaching post , he passed the first state examination in 1930 and the second state examination in 1932. He actually wanted to work as a regional geologist. However, the professional prospects seemed too uncertain for him, so he decided to pursue a career in school service.

After completing his studies, Wittmann worked as a volunteer scientific worker at the advanced high school in Lahr from 1932 to 1934 . During this time he dealt with the Quaternary and the tectonics of the Lahr foothills . From 1935 to 1936 he was an assistant at the geological-paleontological institute at Heidelberg University. In 1936 he married his wife Josefa. In 1940 he was in Furtwangen for teacher and was appointed during the Second World War the Regierungsbaurat Air Force . He became a prisoner of war and returned to Germany in 1946.

After the end of the war, he began to work as a teacher at the Hans-Thoma-Gymnasium in Lörrach , where he was appointed senior lecturer in 1959 and a high school professor in 1971 . In addition to his time as a teacher, he conducted geological studies in the central and southern Black Forest . In 1948 he therefore became a volunteer at what was then the Baden Geological State Institute. After the war he re- mapped the Lörrach paper, which went to press in 1952. There he was particularly interested in the stratigraphy of the Jura , Tertiary and the fracture zone between Kandern and Lörrach, the Dinkelberg , the Isteiner Klotz , the terraces on the Upper Rhine , the meadow and the southeastern end of the Upper Rhine Rift .

In 1969 he received a teaching position for geography at what was then the University of Education in Lörrach . When the Dreiländermuseum moved into the pedagogical building in 1978, Wittmann took over the installation of the geological department, some of which he procured himself. In 1973, Wittmann moved from Lörrach to Eimeldingen after his retirement . Even in his retirement he worked with geologists from the border triangle, especially with colleagues from Basel . Together with Hermann Fischer and Lukas Hauber, he published the geological map Blatt Basel on a scale of 1: 25,000 and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Basel in 1973 . In 1967 he became an honorary member of the Upper Rhine Geological Association (OGV) .

He died after a serious illness and was buried in Eimeldingen.
