Owen Franks (born December 23, 1987 in Motueka , New Zealand ) is a New Zealand rugby union player on the position of the pillar . His older brother Ben Franks is also a New Zealand rugby union player.
Franks attended Boys' High School in Christchurch , like his brother, and is a member of the Linwood RFC rugby club. In his youth he played for the New Zealand national school selection team as well as for the U-21 national team.
In 2007 he played for the first time for the Canterbury RFU selection in the New Zealand rugby championship . In his first season he won the Ranfurly Shield with Canterbury , but was not actively involved due to an injury. He was then able to become champions with Canterbury in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 and win the Ranfurly Shield again in 2009 and 2010, although since 2009 he has rarely played games for Canterbury due to national team commitments.
Since 2009 he has also played for the Crusaders in international super rugby . With them he failed in the semi-finals in 2010 and in the final of the championship in 2011. His brother Ben has also played for the Crusaders since 2006.
In 2009 Owen Franks played in a game of the Pacific Nations Cup for the Junior All Blacks before he was nominated for the first time for the New Zealand national team (All Blacks) that same year . With her he played in the Tri Nations 2009 and successfully defended the Bledisloe Cup against the Australian national team (Wallabies). In 2010 he played for the All Blacks for the first time together with his brother in the June international match against the Irish national team . With him and New Zealand he was also able to win the Tri Nations 2010 and again successfully defend the Bledisloe Cup against the Wallabies. He also won the fourth Grand Slam in their history with the national team on their November tour . In 2011 he defended the Bledisloe Cup again with the All Blacks and won the 2011 Rugby Union World Cup with his brother .
